The 25th anniversary of Spike Lee's opus, Do The Right Thing, is tomorrow (June 30) but the lauded director celebrated the silver anniversary of the film with a block party yesterday in Bed Stuy. Several celebrities showed up for the event including John Singleton, Dave Chappelle, Erykah Badu, Wesley Snipes and Public Enemy and Yassin Bey who both performed.

In what had to be the ultimate props, President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle recorded a brief video tribute to Lee and the film which tackled race relations in Brooklyn at the time and starred Danny Aiello, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Giancarlo Esposito, John Turturro, Samuel L. Jackson, and then neophyte thespians Rosie Perez and Martin Lawrence. Apparently the couple went to see the film on their first date. “He was trying to show me his sophisticated side by selecting an independent filmmaker, and it ended up being a pretty good movie,” said First Lady Michelle Obama.

“So Spike, thank you for helping me impress Michelle, and thank you for telling a powerful story,” added President Obama. “I’ve got a few more grey hairs than I did back in 1989. You don’t look like Mookie anymore. But Do the Right Thing still holds up a mirror to our society, and it makes us laugh, and think, and challenges all of us to see ourselves in one another.”
