Beastie Boys Memoir to Arrive This Year
Hip-hop has a rich history, and the Beastie Boys are surely a part of it. With the type of stories and experiences they have to offer, it only makes sense that members Ad-Rock and Mike D would release a book of their own, slated to release sometime this fall.
In an interview on Beats 1, Mike D explained why the long-awaited memoir, which will detail the lives of Ad-Rock, Mike D and the late MCA, has been delayed. The project was originally planned for a 2015 release. “We’re actually going to finish it, and it’s going to come out finally," he shared. "Like many things we embark on, there are many false starts and, honestly, directions we went in that we realized were not the directions we should be going in, but it’s gonna be coming out in the fall of this year."
He then set the scene, explaining the time frame in which the book takes place. "To tell our story, we have to give the cultural history of where we came from," Mike elaborated. "So New York City in the ’80s, you had all these incredible, exciting music, art, film, all that sort of has to converge to be able to explain. We just had the good fortune of being around all of it so I think that’s No. 1."
While the group stopped creating music as the Beastie Boys after the death of member Adam "MCA" Yauch in 2012, their influence is still being felt. One of the characters in Star Wars: The Last Jedi is named after a Beastie Boys track, and Ad-Rock lent his visibility to Planned Parenthood, designing a shoe to raise money for their cause.
