Exclusive: Kendrick Lamar Says “Everything Happens For A Reason” After Grammy Snub

The biggest hip-hop storyline from the 2014 Grammy Awards was Macklemore beating out Kendrick Lamar for just about every major hip-hop award; on Grammy day last Sunday (Jan. 26), Macklemore walked away with four Grammys for Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance and Best New Artist while Kendrick walked away with zero. Many people had strong opinions on the matter, from Twitter to artists like Fabolous and YG, and even Macklemore himself, who texted K. Dot that good kid, m.A.A.d city deserved Best Rap Album. XXL recently caught up with King Kendrick after his performance with Dom Kennedy last night in New York City, and asked for his thoughts on Macklemore’s victories.

“It’s well deserved; he did what he did, man,” Kendrick said. “He went out there and hustled and grinded. Everything happens for a reason; the universe comes back around, that’s how it go.”

While Kendrick may have grounds to feel snubbed, he’s hardly the first rapper to come up empty; hip-hop legends such as Snoop Dogg and Nas have been snubbed numerous times. “I definitely feel like they should always have more of the culture up in there, for sure, because we definitely stand out just like any other genre,” Kendrick said when asked if he thought the Grammys undervalued hip-hop. “We part of the world. We part of the movement. So I think any awards, including the Grammys, should always push for more hip-hop because it’s music as a whole, it’s not just splitting different regions. Everything moves as far as sound and vibrations, and that’s how it goes. And we are a part of that.”

TDE’s CEO Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith, tweeted in December of 2013 that every TDE artist is dropping a project this year. Isaiah Rashad dropped his debut EP Cilvia at midnight on Monday evening, and ScHoolboy Q is releasing his debut album Oxymoron Feb. 25. Is King Kendrick next in line? “I wouldn’t even know,” he said to XXL. ”I got to get back into the studio and vibe out. But once I get in there, for sure, I’ll let y’all know.” —Emmanuel C.M. Top Dawg didn’t say EVERY artist was dropping something this year, he just said that they’re dropping 6 albums. Two of them are Ab-Soul’s.

    • BasedGod

They asked Schoolboy Q if every artist is dropping an album, he said “That’s the plan”.

      • wat

When was this? Q just recently said Soul is dropping two albums this year plus Kendrick said he hasn’t even been making music yet.

        • BasedGod

Interview with Sway, Kendrick did say he was ready to zone back in. Kendrick isn’t going to drop nothing for 2 years straight.

          • wat

            Three years lol

          • BasedGod

2 years, it dropped in 2012.

          • wat

Again, he’s not dropping anything this year lol. Kendrick takes his time when making music so if he says he hasn’t even started crafting music again, there’s no way he’s dropping something this year. He doesn’t even have to anyway. He’s so highly regarded by the masses and good kid, m.A.A.d city was so good, there’s no rush or pressure on him.

          • BasedGod

Again you’re spitting fallacies, Kendrick zoning back in fact. Kendrick is in the studio. That’s stupid to release 2 projects for Ab-Soul. Schoolboy Q even said he’s heard some of Kendrick and Jay Rock shit. So, Idk what the fuck you talking. And their is rush we want a new project, fanbases start to diminish if you wait to long.

Mr. Lamar’s album was unquestionably better than macklemore’s. Macklemore’s album was used to push a political agenda by the pro-gay marriage grammy’s. Plain and simple. If Macklemore’s album, instead of ‘Same Love’, had an awesome and catchy song that had nothing to do with gay marriage, I guarantee you kendrick would have won.

um thrift shop? can’t hold us? both #1s on the rap charts

      • BasedGod

        And they both lyrically sucked.

You should watch the Grammys more… they pick whomever they’ve heard of, and for an old white voting group, that’s Macklemore with his crossover hits. No homophobia needed to figure this one out!

      • Eric

I’m for gay marriage, just stating an obvious fact
