Vic Mensa Believes He’s One Of The Best

Chicago rapper Vic Mensa knows a little something about the record industry. He's been courted for years by major labels, both as a member of the band Kids These Days and currently as a solo artist. Despite the offers, Vic is sticking independent, just like his fellow Chi-town MC Chance The Rapper. The current landscape in music lends itself a lot more to being indie than it used to, Vic told XXL.

"Opportunities present themselves in different ways these days than they did in the past," he said. "There’s a lot more you can attain for yourself by yourself."

One look at the production credits on Vic's latest project, Innanetape, and you can see what the 20-year-old MC is talking about; both Boi-1da and Hit-Boy, two big-name producers usually reserved for major-label funded projects, have beats on it. And Vic promoted the album by going on tour with J. Cole and Wale, two artists signed to majors.

Rather than depending on major funding, Vic is banking on something else to help him get to stardom: his talent.

"I know I'm one of the best out here rapping right now," he said. "I'm just about to turn it up on this motherfucker."
