An appeals court judge has ruled that incarcerated Hot Boys member Turk should be allowed to withdraw his guilty plea in the 2004 shooting of a narcotics officer. The rapper was sentenced to 12 years in prison as a result of the plea. According to The Commercial Appeal, Tennessee’s Court of Criminal Appeals ruled that the plea was not knowingly, voluntarily and understandingly entered. In 2006, Turk entered an Alford plea, which means that he did not admit guilt, but rather acknowledged that the existing evidence could possibly lead to a conventional conviction. The New Orleans native stood accused of shooting SWAT team deputy Chris Harris during a raid. He also plead guilty to a federal charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm, which resulted in a separate 10-year sentence. Turk’s attorney had sought to have the rapper serve his sentence in a federal prison, concurrent with the firearms conviction. The Federal Bureau of Prisons denied the request, and so Turk petitioned to withdraw the guilty pleas in state court. The petition was originally denied, but the Appeals court has now granted the request.
