1995: Amid the Dirty South's hip-hop genesis, Atlanta group Goodie Mob dropped their debut album Soul Food on Nov. 7, 1995. Seen as the baby brothers of the Dungeon family, Goodie Mob, made up of Big Gipp, Khujo, T-Mo and Cee-Lo at the time, teamed up with production trio Organized Noize to create a musical feast as good as a home-cooked meal.

The album's title track featuring Organized Noize's Sleepy Brown was the radio single of the bunch, but cuts like "Cell Therapy" and "Thought Process" spin winding tales of Black Southern strife and joy. Andre 3000 and Big Boi of OutKast made guest appearances on the 19-track album, as well as fellow Dungeon Family members Cool Breeze and Witchdoctor. Cool Breeze is the first rapper in recorded history to use the term "dirty South."

Many credit this Goodie Mob debut, along with OutKast's Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, for bringing the Dirty South movement to a mainstream stage. The album peaked at No. 8 on Billboard's U.S. Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums and No. 45 on the Billboard 200. The album was praised for it's live instrumentation on the production side, and the gritty Southern and socially conscious lyricism from the MCs. Even 22 years later, Soul Food is consider a down home hip-hop classic and stands a marker for the beginning of the "Dirty South's" takeover.

For the album's 20th anniversary, XXL sat down with Cee-Lo Green to discuss its' impact in the Winter 2015 issue. "Soul Food was significant between the Civil Rights leaders of the South because we were fighting for the civil rights of Southern hip-hop," he explained. "So we looked at ourselves more as activist than artists or a hip-hop balance of them both."
