The Break Presents: Lorine Chia

Being mistakenly listed as a guest vocalist on “Blood on the Leaves” from Kanye West’s Yeezus only brought more deserved endowment to Cleveland, OH.’s multi-talented songstress Lorine Chia.

Recently catching the attention of most major music news sites and fans alike, Chia’s most recently released project Naked Truths presents a collection of songs like no other. Think of “Amy Winehouse on a hip-hop track.”—Interview By Paul Meara

Age: 20

Hometown: Cleveland, OH.

I grew up listening to: I grew up listening to, you know, Kanye, Coldplay, John Legend and Amy Winehouse, and N.E.R.D. and The Cool Kids.

They were all ahead of their time and they were all making sounds that people were just wowed by so, just all those sounds and Amy’s voice with like and Chris Martin’s voice from Coldplay and John Legend’s voice all put together, that’s what I tried to sound like for the longest. Just their instrumentals and the sounds they used–it’s pretty like electro and hip-hop at the same time but it’s really not, you know what I mean? It’s just an all blend of all different genres together.

Most people don’t know I: I don’t know [Laughs]. What don’t most people know? People don’t know that my favorite color is purple.

My style’s been compared to: It’s been compared to Amy Winehouse, Erykah Badu, Nina Simone; everybody says I’m a modern-day version of these women.

My standout records and/or moments to date have been: Standout records would be the “Bout It” record. I guess people really haven’t heard girls do a trap song like that but that one’s definitely amazing. “Eve’s Perspective” is like a biblical perspective of Adam and Eve. Everyone was very intrigued by the story. “Fly High” was a whole new sound like everybody was just like, “What!?” Everybody said it was like Amy Winehouse on a hip-hop track. I was like, “OK” [Laughs]. “Might Come Around” was also a good one.

Performing in Indianapolis was crazy, that was the first crowd that turnt up all the way. Everyone in the crowd was jumping, going ham. Everybody got on the stage, we had a lot of fun–that was just the top memory.

My goal in Hip-Hop is: My goal is just to be one of the greatest musicians ever. I just want to make good quality music for the rest of my life. I don’t want to precisely say like, “What’s my goal for hip-hop.” I just want to be a legend, be an icon.

I’m gonna be the next: I’m going to be the next or the first Lorine Chia [Laughs].
