Chavis Chandler, who just released his mixtape Dark Skin Jermaine And The Legend Of The Leather Britches, is confident he’s the next to blow out of Detroit. Influenced by the likes of Missy Elliott and DMX, he believes his unorthodox style will catch on quickly. New age hip-hop.

Standout: "OFTLOA"

And: "Orderly Fashion" featuring Nolan The Ninja

Name: Chavis Chandler

Age: 22

Hometown: East 7 Mile, Detroit, MI.

I grew up listening to: Missy Elliot, DMX, Eminem, Lauryn Hill, Wyclef, OutKast, Wu-Tang, Jay Z, Busta Rhymes.

Most people don’t know I: Produce, engineer and write. And I'm a culinary school dropout. Cooking is my second favorite thing to do.

My style’s been compared to: Kid Cudi, Sampha, Kanye, Big K.R.I.T., John Legend.

My standout records and/or moments to date have been: Being featured on MTV Rap Fix with a song that is still one of my personal favorites and many others called "OFTLOA" (Only For The Love Of Art). And the second has to be opening for Ab-Soul in my hometown in Detroit at Andrews. I think I performed more songs than him too. I was the final opener.

My goal in Hip-Hop is: To bring something special every time I make a record. Treat my first like my last and my last like my first.

I’m gonna be the next: I get inspiration from a short list of artists and I've created my own unique sound that works because I have a voice that's raspy and stands out. I have no method to the way I create it's very unorthodox and I come with something different everytime some sound familiar to people some don't but when I put my spin on it then you know without seeing my name. I'm gonna be the first to do what I'm doing the way I work.
