On Friday, Sept. 7, Mac Miller tragically died of a suspected overdose in his San Fernando Valley, Calif. home. In light of his untimely passing, his family has released a statement reflecting on his impact on the world and requesting privacy during this difficult time.

“Malcolm McCormick, known and adored by fans as Mac Miller, has tragically passed away at the age of 26,” his family told Rolling Stone. “He was a bright light in this world for his family, friends and fans. Thank you for your prayers. Please respect our privacy. There are no further details as to the cause of his death at this time.”

Police were called to the 2011 XXL Freshman's home around noon on Friday after one of his male friends called 911. Emergency responders were reportedly on the scene to assist in a cardiac arrest. A few hours later, it was announced that he died.

An outpour of love and support from the hip-hop community was almost instantaneous as artists like Wiz Khalifa, Chance The Rapper, 2 Chainz, Earl Sweatshirt and more expressed their heartbreak.

Miller dropped his long-awaited album Swimming just last month to critical acclaim. Next month, he was set to go on tour with Thundercat and 2018 XXL Freshman J.I.D.

Mac becomes the latest young artist to pass away too soon. Florida rapper XXXTentacion was shot and killed earlier this summer on the same day as Jimmy Wopo.

An investigation into Mac Miller's death is currently underway as friends, family, fans and the hip-hop community mourn his passing.
