Kendrick Lamar Urges Lil Wayne Not to Retire
Lil Wayne may have reached his breaking point last week when he wrote on Twitter, "“I AM NOW DEFENSELESS AND mentally DEFEATED & I leave gracefully and thankful I luh my fanz but I’m dun.” The notion that Wayne would retire from rap left many dejected, with Young Thug sharing some heartfelt words on Twitter in response, among them, "I’m with u for life, ur the reason I rap."
Now, another rap star is reaching out to Wayne, with Kendrick Lamar posing the above video from a recent studio session, rapping along to some early Wayne cuts and pleading the rapper not to hang it up.
"Public service announcement, nigga. We in the motherfuckin’ studio. 5:30 in the motherfuckin’ morning," Kendrick says, looking and sounding somewhat looser than normal. "Niggas talkin’ bout Squad Up, that’s cliche! We going all the way back, when he was motherfuckin’ 16, 15 years old on some Hot Boy shit. Day one…Nigga talking ’bout retiring and shit. Fuck that, nigga! Retire, quitting rap, whatever you wanna call it. Fuck that, nigga."
Kendrick's inspiration to post came from the fact that he was recording features, thinking of Wayne's insane run from yesteryear. "I seen you, 2007, 2008, I seen you knock out 10 motherfuckin’ features in a row, back to back, nigga," he says.
In March, Lamar called Wayne "the greatest," telling The Coveteur, "Not only because of his music but also because of the culture he put behind it. It was a big part of what he was talking about, so we always hold Lil Wayne in high regards. Juvenile as well. And yeah, it’s the impact of them man. To be a part of it the same way he was a part of it years later is just a great feeling.”
The two have yet to officially collaborate so if Wayne is staying in the game as Mack Maine suggests, then perhaps a studio session can be arranged. Check Kendrick's post up top.
