Ice Cube Wants to Release ‘Friday’ Movie Sequel on Film’s 25th Anniversary
After more than 17 years since the release of the last film in the Friday franchise, Ice Cube announces a date that he hopes to release the next entry, which has been rumored to be titled, Last Friday.
On Friday afternoon (May 3), Cube appeared on the ESPN basketball program, The Jump, and gave viewers an update on the film. The West Coast rap veteran hopes to deliver the new Friday movie in theaters by the 25th anniversary of the original flick's release, which is on April 26, 2020.
"We are pushing for it, we finished the script, we are getting notes from the studio and it's going back and forth," said Cube. "Get into pre-production and start hiring. It would be nice for this to come out on the 25th anniversary. That would be kinda..." to which The Jump host Rachel Nichols quipped, "A good day."
This is great news for fans who have been yearning for Ice Cube to bring back the original cast for one last Friday movie. There's no word on if Chris Tucker will join the project, but it would be nice if he did. In 2018, the veteran comedian, who played the iconic character Smokey in the original film, told ESPN's podcast The Plug that there's a possibility that he would do it.
"I don't know. I talked to [Ice] Cube about it," he told the hosts. "He told me he was working on some stuff. And if it comes together right, I'm definitely gonna look at it and see if it works. 'Cause I never say never; I definitely want to check it out. If it works, it's a possibility."
Aside from the original cast, Cube is also looking for new talent as well for the movie recognizing the opportunity he got when the late John Singleton tapped him to play Doughboy in his landmark 1991 flick, Boyz N' the Hood.
