Common, MC Lyte Pray for Eric Garner’s Daughter Erica After She Was Declared Brain Dead
Nearly three years removed from the tragic death of her father, chokehold victim Eric Garner, Erica Garner has been declared brain dead. Erica, who'd worked as an anti-police brutality activist after the death of her father, suffered a heart attack last week. Now, Common and MC Lyte have offered their prayers for the 27-year-old.
"Devastating! Praying for Erica Garner + sending love + light to her family + friends," wrote Com in a Twitter post that included a link to the NY Daily News story. "Prayers of love and peace to Erica Garner and her family. #GODpleasedeliver," wrote MC Lyte, sharing the same sentiment.
According to the NY Daily News, Erica Garner had been in a coma since suffering a asthma attack that triggered a heart attack last Saturday. Someone operating Erica's Twitter account then revealed that she'd suffered brain damage “from lack of oxygen while in cardiac arrest.”
“She’s not gone, she’s brain dead,” Erica's mother told the pub. “Physically she is still with us.”
The pub reports that Erica suffered her first heart attack after the delivery of her son back in August. At the time, doctors said the pregnancy had exacerbated the stress on her already enlarged heart.
Back in July 2014, Erica's father, the late Eric Garner, died after being put into a banned chokehold. In video of the incident, he can be heard shouting, "I can't breathe." Shortly afterwards, he was pronounced dead, and his death galvanized members of the rap community to speak out against police brutality.
