2Pac-Inspired Musical In The Works, Aiming For Broadway

Tupac Shakur has inspired a great deal of art in his posthumous career, and the most recent project to re-imagine his music in another art form is the currently in-the-works musical Holler If Ya Hear Me. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a "developmental workshop is underway" for a new show inspired by Pac, with hopes of premiering in the 2013-2014 Broadway season. Holler will be co-produced by Shakur's mother, Afeni Shakur, and is set to be directed by Broadway icon Kenny Leon, who has worked on such emotionally-charged plays as A Raisin In The Sun, Fences and The Mountaintop.

The plot for Holler, though not biographical, lends a large part of its tone to Shakur's catalogue. The Reporter claims: "The show is set in the present day, on the inner-city streets of a Midwestern industrial city, chronicling the challenges faced by two childhood friends and their extended families. The story is inspired by and unfolds to the music of Shakur, the influential rapper who died in 1996 and has sold more than 75 million albums worldwide."
