Today in Hip-Hop: Bone Thugs-N-Harmony Drop ‘Creepin On Ah Come Up’ Album EP
On this day, June 21, in hip-hop history...
1994: Bone Thugs-N-Harmony shared their Ruthless Records debut EP, Creepin On Ah Come Up, featuring Eazy-E. The EP has gone down in history as one of the best rap EPs of all time. By the end of 1995, the project went four times platinum.
With standout singles like "Thuggish Ruggish Bone" and "Foe Tha Love of $," featuring Eazy-E, the EP was an instant hit, and cemented Bone Thugs-N-Harmony as a force to be reckoned with throughout the 1990s and onward.
While reflecting on the project, Flesh-n-Bone told XXL, "It was one of those things, man. It was one of those titles that really signified what was goin’ on with the fellas at the time; we was grimy hustlers from the block, we was always creeping on the come up. We felt like it let people know we were gonna keep smashing it, keep coming out the woodwork."
Sadly, the project was marred by sadness. Mere months after its debut, Eazy-E passed away from AIDS, and disputes over his estate ensued. Meanwhile, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony was left fragmented and without their mentor and producer.
Members of the group maintained their love for E, and remembered fondly their time working with him. "Eazy was a real dude, and for him to put everything aside and really focus on Bone really felt good," Wish Bone said. "He was like a brother to us, dog. He used to be with us every day, because he was going through stuff in his personal life and in the industry, because it was around the time when the Ruthless/Death Row beef was going on. He was real humble, real cool, showed us a lot and taught us a lot. We were grateful we got the time we did get with him, because where would music be without Eazy-E?"
