Marvel Pays Homage to Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube in New Comic Book Covers
Marvel released three more hip-hop variant covers today. The covers uses pays homage to iconic album artworks in hip-hop. The four new covers are some of the best yet.
The newest additions include Old Man Logan #1 by Tim Bradstreet (a homage to Ice Cube’s Death Certificate), Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat! #1 by Javier Pulido (a new take on Diggable Planets’ Blowout Comb), Red Wolf #1 by Mike Del Mundo (which pulls from Method Man’s Tical), and Weirdworld #1 by Juan Doe (Snoop Dogg’s “Doggystyle”).
Axel Alonso, Editor-In-Chief of Marvel Comics, told EW, “From West Coast ‘G Thang’ to East Coast Wu — this week, we pay tribute to a wide range of musical styles and four of the most iconic album covers ever.” Alonso spoke to us about how comics and hip-hop have a lot in common.
"I think there [has been] an on-going dialogue between comic books and hip-hop for decades," he said to XXL. "I’m not talking about a rapper wanting to write a comic book or a rapper writing a comic book, I’m talking just that dialogue that we've seen as far as the Wu-Tang Clan; that’s the best example. In comic books, it’s seen how slowly the hip-hop aesthetics have reached its way in how comic books look."
