The worst-kept secret in Chicago is that Lil Herb is the city's best rapper. Last year's Welcome to Fazoland is one of the most vicious, unhinged mixtapes in recent memory, its outlook grim and its threats charged with an unnerving naturalism. Now comes the first video from the long-awaited new mixtape, Ballin Like I'm Kobe. "I'm Rollin" was issued as a single this February; the visuals probably serve to keep Herbo's name in the headlines more than anything. It's stark, grim, low-concept--just like the man himself. In addition to his fever pitch of street-level buzz, Herb appeared on Common's 10th studio album, Nobody's Smiling. That pair teamed up with Chance the Rapper for "Fight or Flight (Remix)," a powerful protest song that came out during the first wave of protests in Ferguson, Mo. over the murder of the unarmed Black teenager Michael Brown by the white police officer Darren Wilson.
