However, one particular war of words that has caught the attention of the rap community is the back and forth between former XXL Freshman Kodak Black and Brooklyn rap star Young M.A, which has inspired a myriad of layered discussions about topics including harassment, sexuality, misogyny and rape culture.
One of the more controversial figures in hip-hop today, Kodak Black is as infamous for his criminal history as he is acclaimed for his hit-making ability and artistic depth. During his rise to fame, Kodak has had numerous allegations of sexual assault levied against him, casting a dark shadow over his career and causing several fans to boycott the rapper's music. But the backlash has not impacted the rapper's commercial success: His most recent album release, Dying to Live, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, serving as proof that he is one of the hottest young stars in rap.
However, Kodak's romantic pursuit of Young M.A, who is openly gay, has brought his history of alleged sexual misconduct back to the forefront, especially in light of his forthcoming sexual assault trial, which is set to begin next month. Feb. 17, 2019The controversy involving Kodak Black and Young M.A began last month, when the "Roll In Peace" rapper made his affections known for the Brooklyn MC via a comment on Instagram. In reaction to a photo that Nicki Minaj posted of herself and Young M.A, Kodak commented “Both Of Y’all a Get It,” a statement many fans took as a sexual advance towards the two New York natives. The fact that Young M.A. identifies as a lesbian made Kodak's thirst seem a bit odd, but was taken as the latest in a string of his head-scratching declarations.
Kodak Black Namedrops Young M.A On "Pimping Ain't Eazy"
Feb. 25, 2019Just a week after his initial comment on Nicki Minaj and Young M.A's Instagram post, Kodak Black doubled down on his sentiments while singling out the latter by dropping her name on his latest single, "Pimping Ain't Eazy." Accompanied by a music video directed by Kodak Black and @Sway_season, "Pimping Ain't Eazy" contains multiple sexual advances towards Young M.A, as well as references to the rapper's sexuality.
"I be pullin' out straps on these fuck niggas/I go Young M.A on these dumb bitches/Like a dyke man, you niggas can't fuck with me," Kodak rhymes on the chorus. He continues to namedrop the rapper on the song's second verse, rapping, "I'm fuckin' Young M.A, long as she got a coochie/Say she got the strap and the toolie, say she put the crack in her booty."
Kodak's Black's incessant usage of Young M.A's name on "Pimping Ain't Eazy" caught the attention of fans and detractors of the embattled superstar, resulting in anticipation for her own response to the song.
Young M.A. Calls Kodak Black "Weird"
March 15, 2019Weeks after Kodak Black's statements, Young M.A addressed the brewing controversy via social media. "Y'all keep talking about this Kodak situation," the "Stubborn Ass" rapper said during an Instagram Live session. "Y'all niggas is weird, bro. Come on, obviously the nigga is weird, bro. Obviously, he on some shit, bro."
M.A later added that she planned to confront Kodak about his comments at the Pot of Gold Festival in Arizona, where both artists were slated to perform at on March 16. "I'll see him tomorrow," she said. "I'll holla at him, if I get a chance to see him. Y'all do this internet shit too much, bro. I don't like the internet shit, bro. I don't like this internet shit. I deal with my issues in person. Y'all dick eating that shit like a mutherfucker, god damn, bro. Chill!"
She ended her diatribe by concluding, "If I don't care about it, why y'all care about it?"
Kodak Black Dismisses Young M.A's Sexuality
March 17, 2019The day after both rappers' performances at the Pot of Gold Festival in Arizona, Kodak Black issued a response to Young M.A's comments during his own Instagram Live session.
"Yo, y’all stop making Young M.A mad. That’s my dog!" Kodak urges fans during the broadcast. "Don’t do that, baby. We gon' catch up. I just wanna be the homie. I just wanna be the forever homie in the cut, vibing... whenever you make up your mind up, I’m here. I’m talking about bae so cute!"
The rapper later took his comments a bit further, dismissing Young M.A's identity as a gay woman and questioning her sexuality.
"How you a girl but don’t want your pussy penetrated? How? Don’t be mad at me, 'cause I want you, baby. Don’t be mad at me!" Kodak's comments would elicit a resounding outrage from members of the hip-hop and LGBTQ communities, who pegged them as repulsive and predatory.
Young M.A. Claps Back At Kodak Black
March 17, 2019Young M.A reiterated her initial comments about Kodak Black during another Instagram Live session. Seemingly annoyed by fans' alluding to the controversy in her comments, M.A chided them for helping stoke the fires, adding that she would address the situation in her own time.
“They take little shit and then try to make it something that it ain’t," the rapper said of the fans. "In the live video, I said, 'I’m literally talking about the people in the comments that kept mentioning the shit, mentioning the shit, mentioning the shit.' And I'm just like, 'Yo, why are y'all still on that, bro? Get off that situation, y'all dick-eating. When I'm ready to confront the shit or how I'ma handle it, I'll handle it that way, why y'all still talking 'bout it? And that was that, y'all just be extra, bro."
She also responded to Kodak's comments about her sexuality and gender, retorting, "I know I'm a female, stupid. Y'all ain't gotta say that, I know that, nigga. But at the end of the day, nigga, that’s not my preference. That’s why I said y’all weird.”
Kodak Black Responds
March 21, 2019In light of the backlash he suffered as a result of his lust for Young M.A, Kodak Black appeared to downplay his comments during a recent Instagram Live session.
"Bro, c'mon be realistic. I am too fly for that shit," the rapper said in reference to his sexual advances towards the Brooklyn MC. "And I got too much resources to go that route. Why would I wanna go that route, over there. I was bullshittin'. I was just bullshittin', man!"
Kodak also asked his fans to leave Young M.A alone due to people being "sensitive," a gesture that was symbolic of the rapper waving the white flag and putting his rift with Young M.A to an end.
