20 of the Best Shawty Lo Songs
The hip-hop community is dealing with the horrific news of rapper Shawty Lo's death today (Sept. 21). The Atlanta native was pronounced dead this morning as a result of injuries suffered in a gruesome car accident in his hometown. Shawty Lo, who is best known for his hit single, "Dey Know," was 40 at the time of his death and is survived by 11 children. While the rhymer may be known for more for his star-studded remixes and charting solo singles, his resume as a figure in the Atlanta rap scene is not to be understated.
Before stepping into the spotlight as a soloist, Shawty Lo had aspirations fit for a mogul, forming the rap group D4L and launching his own independent record label, D4L Entertainment, in 2003. D4L's debut album, Down for Life, which spawned the Hot 100 chart-topping single, "Laffy Taffy," was released in November of 2005 and was certified gold by the RIAA. Executive produced by Lo, Down for Life would open the door for him to step to the forefront, which he did in a big way with the release of "Dey Know" in 2007. In February of 2008, the rapper released his solo debut album, Units in the City, with singles like "Dunn Dunn" and his remix to "Foolish," resulting in his name ringing bells as a top contender in the Atlanta rap scene.
Sustained commercial success on a mainstream level may have eluded Shawty Lo, but his cache of classic singles, show-stealing collaborative efforts and presence in his stomping grounds of Bankhead makes him one of Atlanta's most beloved, if unsung, native sons. And let's not forget the many rappers who name-drop him in their tracks. To celebrate his contributions to the rap game, we've rounded up 20 of the most memorable songs in Shawty Lo's discography.
