Happy Birthday, Currensy!

Today, April 4, is the 37th birthday of New Orleans rapper Shante Scott Franklin, better known to the hip-hop world as Curren$y.

Before he was known as the revered Spitta Andretti, Curren$y was working his way through the ranks of Southern hip-hop. Going from No Limit Records to Cash Money Records early in his career, Curren$y made a name for himself with his laid back, stoner-friendly sound, strong features and consistent album series for fans to latch on to. One of his most famous album series is the Pilot Talk series, which he started in 2010 with his third studio album.

Curren$y's buzz and bars earned him a spot on the 2009 XXL Freshman cover alongside the likes of Wale, Kid Cudi and B.o.B. Dropping his debut album, This Ain't No Mixtape, under Amalgam Digital, Spitta enlisted Bun B, Mickey Factz, Dee-Low and more for the LP. After that, it was nothing but an upward trajectory for the "Elevator Musik" MC. In 2011, Curren$y began his own label imprint, Jet Life Recordings and to date has dropped eight studio albums, the most recent being 2015's Canal Street Confidential. In between those albums, Spitta has supplied fans with multiple mixtapes and EPs like The Owner's Manual EP and a collaborative project with The Alchemist, The Carrollton Heist. His most recent release is Parking Lot Music, a collab project with 808 Mafia producer Purps.
