Che “Rhymefest” Smith has been defeated in his bid for alderman of Chicago’s 20th ward, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The 33-year-old rapper reportedly lost to incumbent and retired Chicago cop Willie Cochran, garnering 45.4 percent of the vote to Cochran’s 54.6 percent, with 84 percent of precincts tallied.

The Windy City MC turned politician took to his Twitter account to state his fight for office is not finished. "Just to [let] everyone know its not over yet," he wrote. "We're on our way to the board of elections we have evidence of massive irregularities."

During his campaign, the Chi-town emcee said he hoped to stimulate economic development in his hometown.

At the polls, Smith expressed a sense of optimism. "It's not about me winning or losing, it's about hope," Smith told the Tribune. "Eleven- and 12-year-old children ask me 'Can you stop the gang banging?' I say 'You have to help, too.' " —Lauren Carter
