The Flatbush Zombies have come a really, really long way. That much becomes clear after watching Building a Ladder, a short Ellington Hammond-directed film that retraces the career origins of the Brooklyn trio and life on the road.

Featuring footage from the Zombies' time on the road and their B-K stomping grounds, the doc finds each rapper examining their motivations to perform. "I think about my past and all the stuff I've done to be here," Erick Arc Elliott says near the beginning of the new short film. "That's probably the driving force for everything. To know that four years ago, five years ago, that like, people probably didn't know what the fuck I was doing. "

From the beginning of the doc to the end of it, we see shots of each group member rocking the stage in front of packed crowds. When we're not getting a look at that, we see shots of them spitting before the fame. Seeing shots of Arc and Meechy Darko without their dreds make you feel like you hopped into a time machine. Same with childhood pics of Zombie Juice.

This doc arrives four days before the group's forthcoming album Vacation in Hellthe long-awaited followup to 3001: A Laced Odyssey . In preparation for that release, they've also unleashed LSD25, a comedic take on late night television.
