Chance The Rapper’s ‘Coloring Book’ Was the Top Album on SoundCloud for 2016
It seems a safe consensus that Chance The Rapper's Coloring Book highlighted what was a stellar year for hip-hop music in 2016, the young Chicagoan earning a number of Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist and Best Rap Album, from the release. In a blog post published Thursday (Jan. 19) SoundCloud bestowed another accolade on the Coloring Book, naming it the streaming platform's top album of 2016.
Part of Coloring Book's online performance is Chance's insistence that the release be a digital exclusive. The project first dropped through Apple Music in May before a wider platform release. That rollout made history for Chance, as the album became the first ever to debut in the Billboard Album 200 top ten off of streaming alone. Chance acknowledged this new mark by retweeting the below gif posted by SoundCloud Wednesday night.
Other notable hip-hop SoundCloud achievements include Desiigner holding the platforms favorite song with "Panda" and Lil Uzi Vert being their most followed artist of the year. Hip-hop was, as one might now assume, one of their five top genres of 2016.
Coloring Book remains a digitally exclusive album with Chance giving no indication that he plans to hard copies, limited edition vinyl or otherwise. President Barack Obama is among those who think Chance should start selling his music, though the independent artist has certainly created his own effective model.
