Unless you've been living under a rock over the past few years, you should be well aware of the current youth movement in hip-hop that has introduced the public to multiple new rap acts, many of which have already established themselves as leaders of the new school. One artist who has managed to catch the public's attention last year is Lil Xan, a relative unknown who's amassed a sizable following largely off the strength of word of mouth and social media platforms, also ruffling a few feathers along the way.
A California native, Lil Xan got his start in the music industry as a photographer, but would put down the lens and pick up the mic in 2016. The choice paid dividends when his 2017 single "Betrayed" became his first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. That success opened the door for Lil Xan to ink a record deal with Columbia Records, but his leap from the indies to the majors would be overshadowed by controversy, particularly his comments about the late Tupac Shakur, whose music the "SLINGSHOT" rapper deemed as "boring."
The backlash to Lil Xan's critique may have been harsh and he may have burned a few bridges with some rap elder statesmen, but the ordeal hasn't lessened the anticipation for his debut album, Total Xanarchy. With a cast of guests that includes 2 Chainz, Rae Sremmurd, YG, Diplo, Charli XCX, Rich The Kid, Yo Gotti, and $teven Cannon, and production from Boaz van de Beatz, Bobby Johnson Beats, Danny Wolf, Diplo, DJ Fu, G Koop, Jr. Blender and others, Total Xanarchy has the makings of an eventful coming-out party for one of rap's most polarizing upstarts.
