9 Hip-Hop Artists Who Embrace Being Gay, Lesbian or Bisexual

It’s no secret that there’s been a longstanding stigma when it comes to homosexuality in hip-hop. Some artists have even had their rap careers tarnished by rumors that they were interested in someone of the same sex. But as a new generation of hip-hop consumers emerge, the culture is proving to be more openminded than ever before.

Last week, both Chicago rapper Taylor Bennett and Atlanta native iLoveMakonnen opened up about their sexuality, serving as perfect examples of the evolving ethos. On Jan. 18, Taylor Bennett, the younger brother of Chance The Rapper, came out as a bisexual man. The 21-year-old shared the statement on Twitter.

“I do recognize myself as a bisexual male [and] have always openly supported the gay community & will keep doing so in 2017,” he wrote. Taylor’s older brother Chance soon tweeted his support for his baby bro. Chano posted a video with Taylor, captioning it “Love this man right here, through any and all. He has grown into a great man. He’s got God and me behind him, he cannot fail he cannot fall.”

Two days later on Jan. 20, iLoveMakonnen went on both Twitter and Instagram to proclaim he is a gay man. “As a fashion icon, I can’t tell u about everybody else’s closet, I can only tell u about mine, and it’s time I’ve come out. And since y’all love breaking news, here’s some old news to break, I’m gay. And now I’ve told u about my life, maybe u can go [live] yours,” he tweeted. Shortly after, his name was a Trending Topic on Twitter. His announcement was supported by his friend and musical collaborator, Tunji Ige, who wrote, “Be free Red Dragon, we got you!”

With so many rappers, singers and producers in hip-hop coming out of the closet and being embraced rather than shunned by their musical peers, it seems the genre might finally be letting go of its prejudice. Here’s a look at 9 Hip-Hop Artists Who Embrace Being Gay, Lesbian or Bisexual.
