In an op-ed for Noisey, 2013 XXL Freshman Angel Haze lashed out at those who appropriate black culture only when it's convenient. Haze qualifies the idea that white rappers want to be black, asserting that they only make that jump when said blackness has been "whitewashed."

Haze also hoped to open a dialogue when white artists adopt piece of black culture. "Like, why the fuck are you doing this or why the fuck are you rapping about this when you’re not from here?" she writes. "It’s an opportunity for us to reassert the culture we come from: This is what you’re appropriating, this is what we are, as a culture, as a people."

Finally, Haze traces appropriation of black culture back to minstrel shows and blackface, suggesting that many white rapper shy away from blackness when it doesn't provide any financial gain.
