Sixteen-Year-Old Producer, Wondagurl, Explains Crafting Jay-Z’s “Crown”

Jay-Z only trusted a select few beat makers to produce the soundscapes that made up his 12th studio album, Magna Carta Holy Grail, and one of them happens to be a 16-year-old girl. Ebony “Wondagurl” Oshunrinde, a high school student in Ontario, Canada made the cut on the album producing the track, “Crown.” The young beatsmith, who has undoubtedly seen her stock quadruple within the last few days, recently chopped it up with MTV News on how she landed her instrumental on such a monumental LP.

The wunderkind explained the conception of the track saying she was inspired by Pusha T’s “Blocka” featuring Travi$ Scott. “I was at home one day and I was looking for reggae samples for a while and I finally found this one that was like crazy, it was Sizzla ‘Solid as a Rock,’” she explained. “I took it and I cut it up and I put it in the software FL Studio and I started building around it, just adding 808s and the more I built, I knew what I wanted.”

She went on to say she sent the beat to Travi$ Scott with the idea of him or Pusha T being on the track. Scott initially told her he would add some elements to the beat, and a few days later informed her of the life changing news that the track would appear on Jigga’s new album.
