Timbaland Breaks Down The Genesis of Jay-Z’s ‘Magna Carta Holy Grail,’ Production Credits

Timbaland is a driving force behind Jay-Z’s 12th studio LP, Magna Carta Holy Grail, both in production and in conception. Revolt TV recently sat down with Mr. Mosley, the main beatsmith on MCHG, and got the story of how he and Jigga overcame bad blood to come together to make this project at Timbo’s urging. “Me and Jay-Z fell out,” Tim started off explaining. “I missed his 40th [birthday]. It was over petty stuff, it was more personal stuff, disagreements. It was not no industry related, it was more personal. And I was wrong.”

The Virginia super producer said the two reunited while he was working on Justin Timberlake’s 20/20 Experience, and reconciled. Jay had no intention of putting together an album at the time. “Man I forced him. I was in his head,” said Tim. “I don’t know if he was going to do no record. We had so much energy. It wont about doing an album, man. The energy in Jungle Studio was so powerful.”

He went on, “I played this one beat. I said, ‘I got something just for you.’ And I played it and he was like (makes surprised face), ‘Oh my God.’ From then, we did two off bat. Then he was like, let’ just go in. And that’s how we did it. We didn’t plan it. It just happened.”

Timbaland handles the bulk of the production, with Pharrell, Boi-1da, The-Dream, Mike WiLL Made It, Mike Dean, Travi$ Scott and Kyambo “Hip Hop” Joshu also adding tracks. Check out the rest of the interview, below, where Tim breaks down the MCHG’s tracks and talks work with Justin Timberlake, J Cole and wanting to collab with Kanye.
