UGK Debuts At No. 1 on Billboard Chart, Plies Right Behind

Bun B and Pimp C, the Port Arthur, Texas duo known as UGK, have scored the first Billboard No. 1 debut of their long and distinguished careers. Moving about 160,000 copies of their new double CD, Underground Kingz, the legendary pair beat out their closest competition by over 60,000 units. Underground Kingz is UGK’s first LP since Pimp C’s release from prison in December of 2005 following a four year stretch on a probation violation. The impressive debut also marks the pair’s highest sales week ever.

Coming in right behind UGK at No. 2 is Fort Meyers, FL native Plies with his debut project Real Testament. Powered by the smash single “Shawty” featuring T-Pain, Plies moved just under 97,000 copies, an impressive showing for a newcomer in an ever slowing market. Elsewhere on the charts we see last week’s big winner, Common, sliding to No. 7 after a 63 percent decrease in sales of his latest, Finding Forever. T.I. will also see a decrease in sales of T.I. vs. T.I.P., which drops one slot to No. 9, bringing him to a to-date total of 902,889. Even with the slight drop-offs, hip-hop artists have once again proved to be a dominant force on the charts, with four artists currently holding it down in the Top 10.
