Supreme MetroCards Start a Frenzy in New York Subway Stations
A thin piece of polyester plastic, a MetroCard means much more to a New Yorker than simply its materials. For many, it is a necessity, a key to the public transportation network that connects home and work. When Supreme announced earlier this month that they would be collaborating with the MTA for a branded card as part of their 2017 Spring/Summer Accessories line, it meant an opportunity for loyalists to bring design to one of their most-used items.
In a tweet published Monday morning (Feb. 20) the MTA announced that the Supreme MetroCards were now vending, with expected chaos ensuing. A limited amount of cards were issued and only at the Broadway-Lafayette Street, 125th Street, Queens Plaza, Marcy Ave, Atlantic Ave, Prince Street, Spring Street, and Union Square stations. As seen in clips below, crowds form around MetroCard kiosks, police even getting involved as they try to add some order to the situation.
The Supreme MetroCard was going for $5.50 at the Supreme store and $75 at metro stations, but has since sold out, some already on eBay starting at $15 and ranging to as much as $100.
Other accessories from the Supreme 2017 line include a CT200u Mini Bike, bar stools, B&O Play wireless headphones, a money gun, glasses, a 14K gold pendant, work gloves, a flask, studded belts, curtains, measuring tape, battery charger, beach towels, bandanas, metal storage boxes, key knives, matches, key chains, pins and skateboard decks.
