Baz Luhrmann, the director of the recent glitzy Great Gatsby remake which tapped Jay Z for its score and included André 3000 and Beyoncé remaking Amy Winehouse's "Back To Black," is reportedly shopping a hip-hop television show.

The director, who also helmed films such as Moulin Rouge and Romeo + Juliet, is apparently focusing on the early days of hip-hop in a show that would follow five friends during the late 1970s, two of whom are a writer and performer. The planned drama will begin in New York in 1977.

According to Vulture, Netflix, Amazon and FX have all been in talks to produce the show, while Showtime and others are next in line for discussions. The show will look at the birth of hip-hop through the eyes of the two main characters, and will contain heavy musical influences, though it won't be a musical.
