Biggest Project: Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star
Why They Are Dope: Few rap acts have left fans clamoring for more like Black Star. Talib Kweli and Yasiin Bey (better known as Mos Def) linked up after they’d both found themselves signed to the late, great Rawkus Records. What resulted was one of the best one-off efforts the genre has ever seen. They collaborated on projects beyond this debut album, and went on to more commercial success as solo acts before teasing us with new material in 2011. Still, none of us can be blamed for hearing one and wishing he was followed or preceded by the other, even now. Should the two Brooklyn natives ever decide to give us another full-length album, we’ll be here.
Its still unclear if Yasiin Bey (formerly Known as Mos Def) is having trouble getting back into the states, but what is clear is he hasn’t spoke to fellow Black Star member Talib Kweli.
“I haven’t spoken on Yasiin cuz it seemed obvious to me that these rumors are unsubstantiated lies. But y’all believe blogs so I must,” said longtime collaborator Kweli via Twitter. “Think about you’ve read about Yasiin. Does it make sense? No it doesn’t. Do you own research if you that concerned. Stop believing blogs. No need to get up in arms. Yasiin is, in the words of Dave Chappelle, chillin out in South Africa #mandelavoice."
According to reports Bey was denied re-entry into the United States after failing to fulfill a performance agreement, despite claims from Times Live that the rumors are false.
