Because time is a flat circle, this week once again belonged to Young Thug. Not only did the Atlanta savant turn in a stellar guest turn on Jamie xx's "I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times)," but he spun a disastrous rash of leaks into another hit with the buoyant "That's All." Of course, it doesn't stop there: Kevin Gates continues his inhuman tear, Gunplay teams up with YG and DJ Mustard, A$AP Rocky teases his star-studded new album and Freeway weighs in on the tragic death of Baltimore's Freddie Gray. These are the XXL staff's picks for the best songs of the week ending today, May 22.

Freeway, "Illuminate"

In his latest effort (which can be streamed via BET), Philadelphia veteran Freeway tackles this year's tragic death of Freddie Gray at the hands of the Baltimore police force. Always a gripping orator, the former Roc-A-Fella MC pairs "Illuminate" with moving footage of protests and community organizing. Rather than speaking about Gray in explicit terms, the song aims to uplift the communities under the thumb of law enforcement and legislators and their deep-seated racism. With buzz about a possible State Property reunion at an all-time high, Freeway shows that he's as vicious and nimble as ever.

A$AP Rocky, "L$D (Love x $ex x Dreams)"

With his sophomore album, At.Long.Last.A$AP, due out shortly, A$AP Rocky turned to the one man who can save us all: Lil B. The Based God premiered the video for "L$D (Love x $ex x Dreams)" via his Twitter account, ensuring that Rocky is safe in the realm of the mystical. That's exactly where the Harlem MC attempts to go in the song's accompanying visuals, which seem to be set in a hybrid of Tokyo, Vancouver and the worst dream you've had in the last three months. Though the breezy record is a far cry from some of Rocky's more formalist material, ALLA seems tailor-made for commercial success, sporting guest turns from Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Schoolboy Q, Juicy J and many more.

Jadakiss and Rick Ross, "Eastern Conference Finals"

Neither Jadakiss nor Rick Ross could find Cleveland on a map. Hawks and Cavaliers be damned, the DJ Envy-engineered union between Yonkers and Miami lights a fire under each MC. Jada adds a touching tribute to the late Chinx, with whom he had collaborated just this year. For his part, the Maybach Music Group capo forgoes linearity for luxury: "Cracks in the pavements and Cartier bracelets/Courtroom cases, steaks and crustaceans." Even if the Heat miss the playoffs again next year, Ross vows to knock down all his appeals.

Young Thug, "That's All"

With his mixtape, Barter 6, still rattling out of car stereos and CVS pharmacies, Young Thug suffered through an unexpected sort of release last week. Nearly 50 of his songs, many presumably from his upcoming studio debut, were dumped unceremoniously onto the Internet. But Thug smartly turned around and parlayed the leak into a commercial release for one of the strongest cuts, "That's All." "I done seen more hoes than Tiger Woods" is perhaps the most outlandish claim a rapper has made this year, and Action Bronson's already dropped an album.

Kevin Gates, "Khaza"

Named after his son, "Khaza" paints a vivid picture of Kevin Gates' ideal vacation: his children on the couch, Mary Poppins, no informants, plenty of codeine, 101 Dalmatians, no men who are tall and lack fashion sense. Rapping viciously on the porch of a McMansion, the Baton Rouge star throws dice, gives his beloved canine some well-deserved camera time and shouts out Kodak Black, the precocious Florida rapper who is currently on trial as a minor. With four sterling mixtapes in only 24 months, Gates may be the world's only perpetual motion machine.

Jamie xx Feat. Young Thug and Popcaan, "I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times)"

The album version of Jamie xx's "I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times)" moves Young Thug's promise to "ride in that pussy like a stroller" to the song's latter half, but at this point, it's pretty much implied. The addition of dancehall star Popcaan makes what was already bound to be the song of the summer even more irresistible. "Every time I have a good time, Duke do, too" will be taught in kindergarten classes for the next three decades as the model of selfless friendship. How old do you have to be to be Secretary of Education?
