Last month, Bay Area rapper The Jacka was gunned down in East Oakland, Calif. (Feb. 2). Jacka, whose real name is Dominic Newton, was shot several times that night around 8:15 p.m. on MacArthur Boulevard. No suspects have been identified in the shooting thus far. Newton was 37 years old.

While speaking with MTV, Freeway talked about the death of his close friend and reminisced about their time together. After Jacka passing, Freeway traveled to California to stay with the Oakland native's family. He described the experience as surreal, as it was hard being out there without his energetic friend.

“I flew out there for his funeral and then I spent some time with his family and stuff, stayed out there for like a week,” said Free. “And it was hard. Because every time I go out there, his energy that he brings to the table, he’s energetic — he’s just a good person with a good heart, so it’s so good to always have him around. Being out there without him was kind of hard.”

Freeway and The Jacka teamed up for Write My Wrongs (2013) and Highway Robbery (2014).  The last time the Philly native saw Jacka was during their recent lecture tour throughout the UK. While abroad, they traveled to five cities, speaking on what it's like to be Muslim and Black within the music industry. After returning to New York, the two shared a meal together and headed to their respective gigs. "That's the last time I seen him," said Freeway in a very emotional state. Check out the clip above.
