Attorney Scott Leemon has revealed new details on the investigation of Chris Lighty’s death.

Leemon, who has worked on many high-profile cases in hip-hop, was a close personal friend of the late hip-hop mogul. Back in September 2012, Leemon launched an independent investigation with P.I. Les Levine to examine the circumstances surrounding Lighty’s death. In an update on their findings, Leemon states that many questions are still left unanswered.

“The main problem that we encountered was that the NYPD did not do a thorough investigation into Chris’ death,” he said in a statement. “In fact, what they did do was cursory, at best.”

The 44-year-old Lighty was found dead at his Riverdale, New York, home in August 2012, and at the time, the Medical Examiner officially ruled that the cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. But Leemon's recent statement calls for the launch of a formal investigation into Lighty's death based on two technical failings. First, Leemon alleges that although the Medical Examiner’s office currently possesses a sample to initiate a test on Lighty's hands and clothes for gunshot residue, that test has yet to be conducted. Secondly, the statement suggests that no DNA tests were ever done on the gun recovered at the scene of Lighty's death to confirm suicide.

Leemon, alongside Lighty’s mother, Jessica Brooks, is requesting that the Bronx County District Attorney’s office take this new information into consideration and begin a formal investigation. They have also put together an online petition for supporters who are seeking closure in Lighty's tragic death.

“Today, I am begging, Mr. Johnson, the Bronx District Attorney, to make my son’s death a priority and work with our investigator to really look into the facts and circumstances leading up to his untimely death,” Brooks said. “We have uncovered real information that needs to be followed up on by those in authority.”
