Beyoncé Defends Lauryn Hill at 2012 BET Awards

On Friday (June 29), news broke about Lauryn Hill having admitted in a court of law to intentionally failing to file tax returns in the past decade, which can lead to three years in prison and $75,000 in fines.

As serious of an issue as tax evasion is, comedian Mike Epps and the group Mindless Behavior made Hill the butt of their joke, while presenting the award for Best R&B Artist at the 2012 BET Awards.

When Epps began to jokingly sing during the presentation, one of the members of the all-boy group said, “You sing bad…like Lauryn Hill’s tax accountant bad.”

The slight drew gasps from the crowd, including Beyoncé.

TMZ claims that after Beyoncé won the award, she quickly modified her planned acceptance speech on the spot to pay respect to Hill and defend the former Fugees member’s name.

“I want to thank all the talented R&B women that came before me like Lauryn Hill and Mary J. Blige,” B said.

But B wasn’t done just yet.

The former Destiny’s Child member and wife to Jay-Z told a BET handler that Epps and Mindless Behavior diss to Lauryn Hill was “disrespectful” and “not cool.”

TMZ says that although the BET employee complimented her for adding Lauryn’s name to her acceptance speech on the fly, B reportedly responded by saying: “I just felt [the diss] was wrong.”

Hill pled guilty Friday to three counts of tax evasion, stemming from the years of 2005, 2006 and 2007, during which time she earned more than $1.8 million.—Jakinder Singh

Jay Z has lines with things about people that he throws in his raps. I bet she doesn’t have anything to say then

Like when Jay had something to say about Hammer being broke on ‘So appalled’. She looks real hippocritical

Dumbass, this is a formal award ceremony, not somebody recording some crap in the lab. Awards are meant to celebrate achievements, not degrade people that have issues in their personal lives. Grow up, and Jay Z’s lyrics have nothing to do at all with Beyonce’, nothing. She didn;t write them, record them, mix them or master them.

at the same time Mike Epps is a comedian… and that was a joke. That’s what comedians do… they tell controversial jokes, on relevant topics. She can thrown Lauren Hills name in her acceptance speech all she wants, it doesn’t change the fact that the chick INTENTIONALLY failed to file tax returns and is now the subject of public scrutiny. She can be ya Hero, but she’s ya Hero who is currently breaking the law & is getting clowned for it… Boo Hoo… that’s the lime light… take the good wit the bad, and pay ya f*cking taxes so u don’t get clowned!!!

I commend her..listening to the joke live, I gasped just like everyone else in the crowd. You could hear the audience booing on live television. 1) The joke was not funny. 2) The kid needed to be checked, the comment was below the belt..know from whence you came young’un (p.s. I’m 25).

Lauryn Hill is facing a possible three years in jail. Nothing is funny about that. Considering the serious situation Lauryn is facing, it’s not joke material. Hammer wasn’t facing jail time when Jay commented on Hammer’s (then very old) bankruptcy, in fact Hammer had rebounded from the bankruptcy already and is back in decent financial shape. So, Jay joked about a then-old Hammer situation that didn’t result in him being taken away from his family (jail), while Mike and Mindless Behavior joked about something that could potentially separate Lauryn from her kids for three years that just happened on Friday. You ever heard someone say “too soon” when someone makes a joke? Comedy is about timing, this incident is too fresh and the repercussions are too serious to be “joked” about. On top of that, the joke wasn’t even funny.

Dumbass snick thinks Jay Z and Beyonce is the same person. You need glasses dumbass, they are two seperate individuals. The article is in reference to what BEYONCE’ said. Dayum dummy.

Who the fuck is Mindless Behavior?

Mindless Behavior has NO RIGHT to insult Lauryn Hill. She is a legend and they are a disgrace to hip hop.

Rich people should pay their fare share of taxes, i could care less about anything else to do with this story. Broke people get taxed to death and stay poor while famous people think they should get a pass? this system is terrible
