Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole Still Hoping to Release Joint Album

J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar are still in talks to work on a joint album. Now, it’s just a matter of cementing the concept and making the time to get it done.

“We’re still trying to formulate it and sit down in a neutral zone, where either one of us is moving and doing shows, interviews and press all the time,” Kendrick Lamar recently told “We want to lock ourselves in the studio and make it right. We got songs where we can actually formulate something, but we want it to be right.”

Months ago, J. Cole echoed similar sentiments to, essentially saying that the duo wants to do the album and will get it done as soon as they find the time to work on it.

Lamar recently revealed to XXL that his as-yet-untitled upcoming album, which he hopes will be released some time next year, is set to feature production from both Just Blaze and Pete Rock.

“We got some shit,” he said about the Blaze collabo. “It’s city-based for sure. It’s classic. It’s history-making shit. It’s Just Blaze, a nigga I been listening to since I was 13 when I started rhyming, listening to Jay and all those Rocafella albums.”

And while the Pete Rock session hasn’t take place yet, KL says he looks forward to getting in the studio with the legendary producer.

“I’m looking forward to working with Pete Rock,” Kendrick said. “He just reached out to me. That feels muthafuckin’ great. I got to get back to him, so we can make it work.”

Kendrick Lamar was also the headliner for XXL‘s Break show on Monday, December 19, with sponsors Hennessy. Check out a recap of the showcase here. —Mark Lelinwalla
