N.W.A Biopic to be Written by White Woman

Seminal West Coast rap group N.W.A are about to get a woman’s touch…a White woman.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Andrea Berloff—the writer behind Oliver Stone’s controversial film, World Trade Center—has been tapped to pen the group’s forthcoming biopic, Straight Outta Compton.

As THR points out, it seems as if there is a new trend in Hollywood with Caucasian writers working on African-American-themed films, with movies based on Martin Luther King, Richard Pryor and Rick James all being documented by Whites.

Former group member Ice Cube and Tomica Woods-Wright—group leader Eazy-E’s widow—are producing the film for New Line Cinema. As of press time, Straight Outta Compton has yet to receive a release date. —Elan Mancini

  • IndyKid

Ah shit! Stop the presses. This is ridiculous. There is no way in hell that a WHITE woman could have any possible understanding of a worldwide super group that everyone has heard of!!! We definitely need a BLACK man to write this. He’ll have a telepathic connection between the group due to his color and gender. That way, there’ll be no confusion as to what really happened with N.W.A.

Grow up guys. It’s the 21st century…You’re gonna segregate the folks who can and can’t write N.W.A. books?

You race baiting half-a journalist. who gives a goddamn if she’s white or black? Cuz she is white, does that mean she won’t understand what is going on? Cube and Eazy’s widow are both on board. That is enough for me. You are an unprofessional ass.

    Sincerely
    Alexander G. Tomlinson

    • Young Mo Fo

Yeah I agree, does race matter that much that you can’t let a proffessional do their job? Just becuase shes white, she cant make a biopic on NWA? Back in the day you couldnt do things becuase the color of your skin, and now times should have changed to the point where we are all equal to one another. Save that ignant shit for someone else.

  • Worley

“it seems as if there is a new trend in Hollywood with Caucasian writers working on African-American-themed films.”

Stop thinking in the present. The issue is not simply a white woman writing the NWA doc. It’s the historical legacy of white folks molesting facts to write their version of events. This is the latest chapter in an ongoing saga.

  • Sha

OK!!! A MESSAGE TO ALL PEOPLE…. AND THIS MESSAGE IS FROM A BLACK MAN!!!! What difference does the color of someone’s skin make as it pertains to journalism? The person is only taking notes on history. It isn’t as though she is making a fictional retelling of the NWA story. Not to mention the fact that this “White Woman” has probably more insight into the history of NWA than I or any other self-professed blogger who is complaining about her color. This piece of journalism from XXL is the most sour, irrelevant piece of shit that I have seen from them in a while. Hip-Hop should unite us. Not separate us. Hell… Truth be told, I remember seeing white kids and black kids with those NWA T-shirts when I was coming up. Just because your color is different doesn’t mean that you can’t relate to the struggle. A white kid in suburbia, a Brazilian kid in Sao Luis, and an African kid in Johannesburg can still say fuck the police in unison. XXL… Get your shit together.

    • Silky Johnson

Whaddup Sha, that’s some real talk right there. That is the kind of mentality that is going to move this country forward instead of dividing us.

As an Indian kid from Queens, NY that used to shout Fuck The Police (when my parents and the police couldn’t hear me) I whole-heartedly agree with this sentiment.

      Also
“This piece of journalism from XXL is the most sour, irrelevant piece of shit that I have seen from them in a while.”
This is where you are mistaken. This is not journalism at all.

For one, if you try to find black writers you’ll end up with a straight to dvd hood flick. Second, this is not new. Almost all movies and tv shows starring blacks are written by whites.

Third, NWA was started by a Jewish man and a black republican. It consists of middle class individuals who pretended to be from the rough streets. NWA is a white creation as is gangsta rap so a white writer is best able to capture the essence.

The best active black screenwriter is Tyler Perry, who wants to sit through that basic drivel?

I’m just imagining the headlines if the reverse were true:

“EMINEM BIOPIC TO BE WRITTEN BY A BLACK MAN”

    • OfficialDeejayW

I wouldn’t care if a black man wrote an Eminem biopic. It wouldn’t make a difference to me. I would just want him to do a good job with it, and race would have NOTHING to do with it. It just doesn’t make a difference.

XXL – you can really go suck a dick for this post you retarded ass racist. I understand none of you actually are racists most likely, but you sure did do a great job of trying to convince us otherwise with this. Pretty unprofessional.

As stated above, Cube and Tomica are producing the film. One could assume that neither one of them would green-light a bullshit film about THEM.

However, the Notorious film was a lil one-sided to me. I’m not concerned about what color the writer is. I’m concerned about the true story of NWA being cherry-picked and censored in order to make a box office hit (like Notorious). Tomica and Cube are on board – that’s good. What about Jerry Heller, Dee Barnes, the FBI, Dre, Yella, Ren and DOC? Do they provide input too? Lil Kim had NO input with Notorious, which kinda soured the movie for me even though I went to see it.

    Just sayin’…

next thing you know a black guy is gonna be writing elvis’s biopic

  • http://azrael-haze.deviantart.com Azrael

FACT: Race has no biological basis. None.

So, this article is pure bullshit.

  • OfficialDeejayW

Hey I’m a white guy and all I listen to is rap and hip-hop. Music has nothing to do with your race, and I’m sure none of the N.W.A. members thought so either. They’re music was about freedom of speech, and it was for everyone. I always bump “Express Yourself” and “Straight Outta Compton”, and of course all of Eazy’s solo stuff. Plus Eazy’s widow and Ice Cube are both cool with it, so what does it matter? This lady might have her research down, and I’m sure they wouldn’t hire her if she didn’t. And I’ve met some black people who don’t know Tupac or N.W.A. so… Just goes to show music is for everyone.

This is the biggest reverse racism ever who cares if she is white. We should start looking at each other all as human beings and not by our color. By all means if she does a bad job let her have it but her reporting skills shouldnt come into question based on her race. Wouldnt I be called a racist if I had a problem with a black guy doing a biopic on Eminem? Its 2010 wake the fuck up. Its sad when the minorities become more racist than the white folks

  • Jess

Wow. It is crazy how much everyone bitches these days. Yes, racism was a HUGE problem and still is but not close to the degree it was. Now days, there’s more non-racist people then racist. But a lot Minorities still call everything out. BOY WHO CRIED WOLF. No one is listening anymore to legitimate issues because you bitch about everything. If ALL the movies coming out were about White leaders and musicians you’d COMPLAIN. So, now a movie well deserved about some of the pioneers of rap is coming out and you bitch it’s not written by a BLACK person? Who cares. A writers job is to get absorbed into the material, know the people and learn all the facts. It’s better to have the best writer you can find, not pick someone because they’re black. At what point is it that the only racist in the room is you? Seriously, I’m a white male and have no issues with anyone. I hate racism more than anything but see it more and more going to the other side. I always find myself sticking up for minorities if I do see issues. When is the last time you stuck up for a white person when a friend or writer like this calls some bullshit out? People are people. There’s assholes in every race and religion. Don’t let them change your overall view. Once you judge everyone together, you’re no better than those people you hated your whole life. If this doesn’t fit you, than don’t be upset. But if this description fits you, then take a good look in the mirror. I have news for you, everyone is going through hard times. Not just minorities. LIFE is hard. Period. The sooner you stop searching for excuses and tackle the obstacles in your way, the better you’ll be.
