Lil Wayne might be gone ’til November, but Young Money is still in the house. Nicki Minaj and Drake take center stage next month as Weezy’s protégés grace the cover of the May 2010 issue of XXL. Both have built a deafening buzz throughout the past year and change, with standout verses and chart topping singles under their respective belts. With fans clamoring for their highly anticipated debut albums, Drake and Nicki stand on the cusp of being crowned hip-hop’s new reigning king and queen. XXL Editor-in-Chief Vanessa Satten sits down with Nicki for a candid Q&A, while senior editor Benjamin Meadows-Ingram documents Drake’s rise.

In addition to our in-depth interviews with the Young Money all-stars, this blockbuster issue also includes investigative pieces on the struggles of female MCs and the death of the New York rap star, complete with a borough-by-borough breakdown of the Big Apple’s hip-hop history.         One thing I agree with is that Nicki’s original shit made me appreciate the fact that there is pure raw lyricism in this chicks bag, theres even a comparison piece I did on my blog, the issue I have is not so much with Nicki, its with this whole industry shit.     I’m not in anyway, shape or form a fan of Nikki Minaj (or Drake for that matter), but I gotta say what irritates me about the haters is that as soon as you see any news posted about Nikki, everybody wnats to defend the honor of females in hip-hop. Dudes will say Nikki sucks balls and will through in a bunch of female rappers like Shawnna, Eve, and Jean Grae as true female emcees. I’m not saying that Nikki’s better than them or that they shouldn’t recieve any recognition, but why the fuck does it have to take a female rapper who admittingly uses sex appeal to suddenly make people even REMEMBER these femcees let alone support them? Everyone is entittled to their opinion but please don’t bullshit others into claiming that your defending the intigrity of females in rap when you can’t recognize them besides a female rapper.

    Big Pun is considered a dope rapper and is never even seen as the “best Latino rapper”. Shit in hip-hop, Gloria Valez and Melissa Ford are more prominent figuers in rap than Jean Grae. I’ve never even seen Jean Grae, Lauren Hill, or any female rapper in a lot of people’s list of top emcees. Females in hip-hop are really consider by many as a subclass of rap like Reggeaton, Dance rap, or electro-rap. So considering how female rappers aren’t even respected along side their male counterparts and are only recognized if their half-assed naked, how can anyone be made at Nikki for using this to her advantage. Nikki showing her ass wouldn’t be an issue if dudes would be supportive of female lyricists rather than ignore them and only remember their names whenever a whorish female rapper comes through.

    No matter how angry you get at Nikki for getting attention by using her ass, chances are you will never go out and buy an album by Rah Digga even if she wrote on some Illmatic level and had production by Dre, Pete Rock, Neptunes, and Timbaland with singles hitting the charts. It’s one thing to hate Drake for not displaying as much talent to match the hype. It’s another thing to hate Nikki for using her body generate her hype when it wouldn’t have been generated from her lyricism no matter how good she could have been.
