XXcLusive: Bun B Leaves Asylum for Universal

Looks like fans are going to have to wait a couple more months for Bun B’s new album Trill O.G. to hit stores. The Southern rap vet recently told XXLMag.com that he’s switching label homes.

“We’re gonna be moving from the Warner Bros. system to the Universal system,” he told XXL.

The UGK rapper will now be going through Fontana, which is a subsidiary of the Universal Music Group. “[This new situation] works better for me,” Bun continued. “I work better in the small system. When you’re in the big system it’s really about breaking you and exposing you and I think I’ve been able to build a career as far as just associating myself. We’re pretty good with that in-house with Rap-A-Lot. But with Universal we are gonna use their distribution legs and promotional chain, because they do have access that we haven’t been able to have before.”

When asked why he left Asylum, Bun had this to say, “[Asylum] helped me immensely over the last four or five years in my career as far as taking, me, myself and UGK to another level. It’s just that the system in house changed. Todd [Moskowitz] got moved up to a higher position and it doesn’t give me as much of an opportunity to be hand on hand on a lot of stuff.”

The Port Arthur, Texas rep has already recorded a lot of material for the follow-up to 2008’s II Trill, including tracks with Drake, Jamie Foxx, Young Jeezy, Trey Songz and DJ Premier, among others. Yet, now as he awaits the paperwork to be finalized, he can work on more music for his upcoming disc.

“It gives me time to work with people that I thought I was gonna miss, like Pharrell,” he shared. “Pharrell and I have been trying to get together for this album but we’ve been having scheduling conflicts, which actually just opened up a nice window for us to record. And it also gives me a chance to finish up recording with Premier. We was supposed to do two, but I only got one done. We were worried we weren’t gonna get the second one done but we got time to get that done. It’s also given me another chance to do another one with Drake and fine tune that whole situation.”

There was one collaboration that Bun remained tight lipped about but promised it would turn a lot of heads. “I got a song that’s just kinda crazy,” he said. “All I can tell you is that it’s a legendary song; literally it’s three legends on this song. Two of them is hip-hop and one of them is a cultural icon.”

As of press time Bun hopes to drop Trill O.G. in May. —Jesse Gissen

It’s better to wait for the man to have the right situation + new records with premier and pharrell than to watch him fail in the wrong label situation, get dropped, and have to hunt high and low for copies of his future material. i wish bun the best of success in his new situation.

Wait a Minute! Universal has a very good “Urban” Department, check what they dropped last Year, including ASHER ROTH! On the other Side, see what WARNER does to it´s Artists. Best Move he could have done, congrats Bun B. , looking forward to some Dope S*** in “hopefully” May!

^ Pay attention homies. Even Meth said it, it’s about to be only ONE label. Go look at the Universal roster, practically everyone is on there anyway. Cash Money, Bad Boy, DTP, CTE, Wu, Ruff Ryders, G.O.O.D., Aftermath, Shady, Maybach, Ill Will, many more.

Good luck Bun. Don’t know where you fit into 2010′s release roster but hopefully you will.

      cosign Syk!

Universal has been the only true rap power house for the last 10 years plus.

are you sure they still distribute Ruff Ryders and Wu though? and is Ill Will still even a “label”?

        Taino! Happy Friday familia.

Yep and Yep. Wu-Massacre/Meth on Def Jam. RR has an extensive catalog that DJ/Universal get $ off of. Glad you see NaS’ “label”. They only get HHID & Untitled. Jada on DJ/Roc gives Universal partial who say in D-Block (why Jada doesn’t do too many songs with them). Fab too.

And FTR, Universal/NBC is owned by COMCAST. The French dudes (Vivendi) sold it. Doug Morris retired. Expect changes homies…

        • latino heat

          thanks for the clarification Syk.

what did you mean by the Jada comment though? he dosen’t do too many songs with who?

also i heard that due to Comcast purchasing NBC/Universal that they were gonna shut down Hulu. is that true?

Why don’t Bun B just go Indie? He already has a large fan base that will follow him wherever he goes, and he’ll get more money out of it too…just my opinion.

And co-sign Syk, I read your blog about all of that, it was a good read.

    @ latino

D-Block. Puffy owns the name The LOX. Jada’s not allowed to drop too many songs with the team. DJ/Universal doesn’t get paid proper for him to be D-Block exclusive. If he did a full album with D-Block DJ steps in for exclusive rights.

They are thinking of making Hulu a pay channel. I see it being the next Sci-Fi/FX channel.

  • latino heat

that explains a lot. thanks Syk. i always wondered why he wasn’t on D Block material as much as Styles and Sheek.

i knew Hulu was too good to last.

I hope everything works out for Bun B – hopefully his new deal will mean his album’s not selling for $26.99 up here in Canada at HMV (the only place to get Bun B cds)! You heard it hear first – asylum cds have an insane list price in canada, marked up like nuts as “imports” even though every dvd in canada is imported thru the united states. The new Rakim is $15 here in Canada, so hell, if I can now get Bun B albums for a reasonable price, dude might actually be able to chart in Canada – any wonder why canada is the #1 country for illegal downloading? yep, better luck next time china!
