9th Wonder to Teach Course at Duke University

This upcoming semester 9th Wonder will begin his new gig working alongside Duke University’s Professor Mark Anthony Neal teaching an African-American Studies class.

According to Neal’s personal blog, the Grammy Award-winning producer will join him in teaching “Sampling Soul,” a course that will examine songs from the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements.

“The class is studying soul music from the 60s, 70s, and 80s, the neighborhoods it came out of and where was the influence for this song to come out of,” Wonder told Maestro Says in an interview [watch below], “I’m excited man, it’s a new frontier for me. I’m always excited for new frontiers.”

Wonder also taught a hip-hop history class at North Carolina Central University, the same university where he met former group members Phonte and Big Pooh of Little Brother as a student in 2001. —Brooklyne Gipson

Now this is a good look for the rap game. Show cats the historic meaning through and behind this music thing. I have BEEN saying that there is way too much music that we have been overlooking just for the quick cash and being the next big thing.

Personally I feel that cats SHOULD go back to sampling. Show these people who did music before us some love. They went through ridiculous things most of us will never understand.

Now watch this post get overlooked…

More than that even. Sure, let’s sample the oldies. What’s more, let’s sample the greats we’ve had in our generation. Now THAT is a good look for the rap game, that’s some respect, and that’s progression.

“let’s sample the greats we’ve had in our generation”.

For real. I would listen to a dude who sampled “Lollipop” and flipped it his way. The same way with a Lena Horne song or “The Streets Is Watching”.

With all these mixtapes anyway cats can get their recognition on the music way before they would have to clear a sample. After all that’s one of the reasons why dudes do mixtapes. Can’t clear the samples.

Along with sampling the greats, we can bump they music more as is. Turn the newer generation on to some other good music.

Maybe young Black kids will pick up the instruments again and actually learn how to play, instead of just pickin it up and posing with ‘em like Lil’ Wayne.

Education= Knowledge = Power but we need to gain Knowledge in what our enemy knows. I got my degree in Computer Science. Get Yours before they Take Yours. A mind is betta than the 9mm. Thats why they killed Dr. KING.

hip hop needs more of this kind of shit happening. Definitely something to shed some positive light on hip hop. On another note though when speaking sampling. When getting clearance for a sample, if you don’t have an inside track w/someone, or have a hell of a budget, it’s almost impossible to get the clearance now a days. ALot of the rules in place for sampling today, have chngd drastically since back in the gap, when niggas were sampling left and right. In the same token, the old heads before us can give more permission for us youngstas to sample their hits. If they don’t support the younger generation in that aspect, then it makes it even harder to get clearance. Just food for thought. By the way, Who ON THIS SITE FUCK WIT JOHNNY GUITAR WATSON?!!!!!!
