XXcLusive: Gucci Mane, Soulja Boy, OJ & Shawty Lo On New XXL Cover

It’s that time of the year again. Gucci Mane, Soulja Boy, OJ Da Juiceman and Shawty Lo recently joined forces to pose for XXL‘s July Issue – the 2nd Annual Hood to Hood Issue.

The Atlanta cover comes one year after XXL‘s 1st Annual Hood to Hood Issue, which featured Miami stars Rick Ross, DJ Khaled, Trina and Flo Rida. In addition to the cover story, the issue includes features on Asher Roth (P.A.), Mos Def (Brooklyn) and Drake (Toronto) and a breakdown of popular hip-hop hometowns.

XXL‘s July issue is set to hit newsstands June 2.

    Ugh

    • siriusharm

I have been a XXL subscriber for almost 14 years and I’ve stayed loyal to XXL throughout all the bullshit hiphop has been through and I still have all my magazines from past years to serve as a record for the hip hop genre but. I even buy the covers with people on them that I don’t personally support as long as the person on the cover at least has talent. But come the fuck on XXL all 4 of these Mouthafuckas suck hands down this is the worst cover I’ve ever seen in all your magazine history the WORST I don’t know who’s calling the shots up there since Datwon left as editor but if this is a preview of whats in-store for the future then I no longer will be a subscriber to your magazine and I will tell others to do the same and you have my word on that.

      • Jack Of Spades

Ok, I understand that these artist may not be the most lyrical. But these artist, in particular OJ Da Juice Man has been working hard recently. If you can’t respect hardwork, what can you respect? you can’t name a artist right now that is working harder then them other then lil wayne and maybe rick ross (due to the 50 cent beef) and a few other. In all honesty I am not a trap dude and I dont have 20K dollar chains, etc. But I can relate to there music because I dont interpret there music so literally. I can compare there hustle to my struggles in the corporate world. I can relate to there chains and cars with how hard i go for my possessions and the pride I hold in putting in work to obtaining them. These dudes is living their dream, yet people find it so hard to relate to understand setting a goal and obtaining it. Secondly I appreciate these artist because they dont be killing hip-hop buy killing by belittling other artist, (which is bad for hip hop) If anything they are working together collaborating with other artist and working hard. In essence music is music if you don’t like it don’t listen. This cover wasn’t designed to fit your fancy of artist. If you feel it could be a better cover artist should put in work to make the cover.

    • RiZob

Man am i glad INTERNET hate/hype does not equal REAL WORLD hate/hype….anybody with half an ear can realize that these four artist have been BLAZIN HOT lately…..I know everybody on the internet believes SB is the anti-christ, but the kid has two hit singles out! (kiss me thru the phone & turn my swag on.) Gucci and OJ have been murdering mixtapes for a minute, and Shawty Lo is along for the ride….This is one of the most accurate and timely covers XXL has ever produced….

      • weezyredz

Rizob you should kill yourself for that comment.

    • The Real South

First, lets start by saying that this is not a reflection of the south. I’m a southerner and this shit sucks, I mean really sucks. I cant understand none of these niggas. I see four koons who are influencing our youth. Its sad, they should all kill themselves. But think about it, all of them are products of the crack era. We are experiencing crack babies aftermath.

Now, I understand that they have a following. So easy solution, get the fuck out of hip hop/rap and get your own genre. Stop fucking up our music. You can call it “trap music.” But if you chose to listen to trap music you might suffer from irreversable retardation.

    • KingTinMan

This is another sad day for what’s left of Hip-Hop. I thought XXL was different, but it’s not. It’s just like the Sauce, and Vibes! You motherfuckaz don’t give a fuck about Hip-Hop! Nobody on this cover has a real future in Hip-Hop! Where is D4L and those franchise clowns? Yall might as well give Favor Flav the next cover. These niggaz are garbage, and I thought that XXL understood this thing of ours. These dope smoken clowns should be on the cover of Right-On or Word UP! Grown people with intelligence and respect for music don’t listen to this shit!! “Stupid Niggaz” should be the title of the article.

    • yooo

Young Jeezy’s success has started a whole new breed of rappers.
These guys are low on skills but have big appeal!
Uncle Murder is in this category too.
They all cool with me, but I still can’t stand Gucci Mane.

  • latino heat

wow XXL. how the mighty have fallen. you’ve actually managed to top that topless Rick Ross cover from last year.

    • http://www.myspace.com/emcdlthemusicprofile EmCDL

That reminds me…whatever happened to Slim Calhoun? Dude can flow! And Field Mob is the most underrated rap group in the A. I listen to them and I’m not even from there; I appreciate all hip hop music as long as its GOOD MUSIC. Whats on the XXL cover up top are people that don’t produce good music IMO…I ain’t heard one good song from any of these cats.

    • $ykotic

      Full co-sign.

  • A GENIUS

SO this COver is Representing the A, as in ATL???… WOW!!… Who said THAT?!?… A simpler BETTER cover would’ve been Simply JEEZY & em… LUDA & em… Just cause AYYYBOdy Lovin the Nig TI and feel BAD, TI & EM… mostly my nig DRO would’ve been a BETTER rep for the A…

DEEZ NIgs… IDK… I like all of em a bit, xcept Solja, but I still Turn my Swagg ONNNN!… but they SUCK after bout 5-10 minutes of listening!.. Listen to Gucci for more than 10 minutes… I BET YOU CANT!

    EX-GIRLFRIENDS > XXL

  • Mutada al sader the king

Cover looks dope. SB is really doing the smart thing and slowly establishing himself as a “grown” artist. Something Bow Wow could never do. It hurts when your looked at as a “child star”, when your in your twentys.

    • http://www.datpiff.com/Dont_Panic_Entertainment_Max_Profit_The_Drugs_Ar.m44293.html Max Profit

      Lol !!!

    • joe p

SB rhymes are not good enough to be considered a grown artist …. grown men have grown men issues and problems to talk about comin up in the hood .. growing up in poverty .. . SB had none of that … so he rhymes what he knows … absolutely nothing so now he talks about ice and money a girl like all other fake ass “rappers” if thats what you wanna call these clowns

  • Bobo D

So this is why DT left

U have got to be shittin me. Well Gucci deserves his shine he’s been grindin for a hot min eva since when Jezzy blew up n took off. But I wouldn’t pick up an album from any of the other 3. Way to go xxl now this is gunna b nuthin but a big ego trip 4 Soulja Boi I can’t even imagine what he’s gunna say in his interview. Why in the fuck couldn’t Killer Mike, Scarface ,Little Brother, and Jay Electronica have made the cover that’s a Trill hood 2 hood cover for ya ass. Y’all love 2 further the assumption that the south houses the worse artists to ever grasp a mic

    • BIGNAT

you got the point i wanted to make but fuck it give the cover to some more up and coming people. gucci kinda deserves to be there i don’t know why those other guys are there.

  • xxmeni21

this cover is the reason people dont respcet the south
yall found the four of the most ignorant mother fuckers out there
add plies and your readers might acually become retarded

    • http://www.xxlmag.com 14snipez

God Dammit he’s fuckin rite n i’m mad az hell bout it. I understand that the mag bizness is in the bizness of sellin their product, but this is EXACTLY the reason why the south is looked at as a joke in the hip hop community. It’s not fair how we are looked down on so heavily by New York we have some of the most talented mc’s down here. And no I don’t mean T.I., Lil Wayne, Ludacris, even though their exceptionally talented but I’m talkin bout mc’s who aren’t really gunna sell big in the mainsteam. Cee-Lo Green, Scarface, Killer Mike, Jay Electronica, Big Pooh, OutKast, Field Mob, Young Dro, Bun B, Clipse(Virgnia is the south whether it’s widely accepted or not) but that’s just off my thinkin cap

  • http://www.xxlmag.com 14snipez

U have got to be shittin me. Well Gucci deserves his shine he’s been grindin for a hot min eva since when Jezzy blew up n took off. But I wouldn’t pick up an album from any of the other 3. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

HAHAHA!!!! Thats crazy, why I aint see that?

  • Jesus Martinez

Damn, I thought this was fake like that issue that had a fake cover in the back with Joaquin Phoenix on the cover and stories on Vannilla Ice and Marky Mark and the Funky bunch.

  • Jesus Martinez

If they wanted to represent ATL, they shoulda got Killer Mike, Field Mob, and Pastor Troy. Field Mob is the most underrated Southern duo and Killer Mike and the Grind Time Rap Gang stay putting out the most quality music in the South.

    • LB

I agree with ya on the choices. But think, this is XXL, a commercial publication. Soulja Boy-hot right now, Shawty Lo-somewhat hot right now, OJ-the same, Gucci Mane-the same. They’re tryin to push units. Besides those cats are signed to the companies who’re uppin the payolla to XXL for that exposure, etc. You know how the game go man.

      • Exactly

Finally, somebody gets it. I personally think all the people on the cover are wack. I listen to em sometimes just to laugh my ass off. But they’re all garbage. Where’s Killer Kill(Killer Mike)? Where’s Dro, Luda, Dungeon Family? Oh yeah, they don’t got a bunch of kid’s songs on the radio.

    • Brass Tacks

  • DaBigBoy

Man everybody on that cover is a loser combine all those records they sold=not even a Millie. They may have a buzz on the internet and in little girls rooms but they dont belong on the so called ” hip hops biggest magazine” all of them are retarded and sound like they dropped out of elementary

Soulja Boy last album flopped didn’t it, and the same with Shawty Lo and Gucci mane last albums. I keep lookin at the cover like WTF? these niggas just a bunch of adlibs. i heard the juiceman nigga start a verse bout noodles and shit. Im born, raised and live in GA and all these niggas is the worst part of hip hop.

  • HU

This is sooo embarrassing. We need a sequel to Bamboozled. Please boycott this magazine people, for the love of hip-hop and for all African-Americans. How can we be in 2009, with a black president, and still have coons mean-mugging in photos and showing off jewelry and tattoos? The combined IQ of this cover is 75. All a racist needs to do is show this cover to people to convince them why racism is justified. XXL I am done with you.

  • Yoson

Your all idiots and sit at your computer 90pct of the day me I only spend 10pct. You see I spend 90pct of my day outside in public. Yeah im white as you can see I didnt say “in the streets” but besides that I listen to everyone on the cover. I will admit souljah boy isnt that talented but he knows how to market himself well. Back to why I said Im in public 90pct of the time is because everyone is bumping gucci mane, shawty lo, yo gotti, and gorilla zoe. Everyone always talks about underrated rappers, well gucci mane is the most underrated rapper he has lyrical skills and is songs are the shit to ride to in the whip. As you see when some underground artist get some exposure like lets say maybe the cover of XXL magazine then you get a bunch of hater like everyone above me. I believe magazines are away to get new talent out like Oj Da juiceman who is doing his thing even though I heard his song half a brick so much I got sick of it. Shawty Lo or they coulda put Zoe on the cover cause his last 3 tapes were fire.

  • The Nuage

Im utterly speechless. Of all the niggas in the A you could have picked to be on the cover you choose these lames? I mean y’all could put fuckin Stat Quo for godsake! Gucci = Garbage, Soulja = Didn’t this nigga get destroyed by Charles Hamilton!? Shawty Lo = One of the biggest failures of the south, and last OJ = You’re the fukin reason why I hate Track 3 of The Last Kiss. Also I could have swore that OJ didn’t fuk with Soulja. I would have rather seen Kanye on the cover than these fags.

Really XXL? You’re getting as bad as The Source. Bring Yellow Nigga back please. I would wipe my ass with this issue, even if I had toilet paper. Souja Boy is the most ignorant, retarded motherfucker in the game. He makes you wish you can go back in time and pay for his mom to get an abortion. Gucci Mane has been garbage ever since Jeezy said he got his jewels from the middle of the mall. I could give a fuck-less about Shawty Lo and that other nigga. I’m going to have to leave this one on the shelf. If I paid for a $12 subscription, I would ask for $7 back.

  • young fam

man everybody on their real expect soulja boy.

  • doomsamonster

well it looks like a majority do NOT like this cover…and they are all right. 3 of them just talk about how much weight they push (oj gucci and shawty) while one just is fuckin retarded (SB). i mean if this is the future of rap then soon all you need to do is just talk over a beat without rhymin and you’ll be a good ass rapper. SMH AT YOU XXL EDITORS

  • http://youngytriz@yahoo.com tyriz

    • Capital G

Did diet tony teach you how to spell? Go have a seat in the corner with him, you’ve been put on time out too.

      • http://tonygrands.blogspot.com Tony Grand$

        Haaaaaaaaaaaahah!

“diet tony” changed his name. Now it’s “B_________a”.

        • Capital G

Is it Beergangsta? (if not, my apologies for the insult in advance) I ain’t nice with the guessing shit. I’ve been looking for misspellings, poor punctuation and random shit to be capitalized for no reason. How about 1 more hint… Did he post on this topic? I gotta be able to giggle at the right retard.

        • Capital G

Fuck it, you don’t even have to dry snitch on the dude. I just went and checked the Cam article and this fucker put down “platium” along with shit in caps for no reason. My mind is made up regardless. Thanks for the hints Grand$. How the fuck did you sniff him out anyway?

        • http://tonygrands.blogspot.com Tony Grand$

          Ha!

I’ll put it like this; I read a lot. I study word usage & style.

          So……………

The same way I know that the “Combat Jack” drop up top is not the real CJ. Lowercase I’s & improper spacing.

        • Capital G

Maybe the CJ drop was done by a bitter “Joell Ortiz”.

        • http://tonygrands.blogspot.com Tony Grand$

CJ did a post about a past relationship where the girl left him for another dude. He told the whole story, & kept referring to the dude as “corny”, saying that the girl stayed sweating him until she married the “corny” guy. He used her real name. In the comments, there was a jpeg address & the dude signed it “Cheers. – Spike ‘Corny’ Lee”. It was a pic of Spike & his wife (the girl CJ was talking about) toasting to the camera.

Dudes in the comments were saying they knew who she was by the description, but then I downloaded the flick. Like Spike said “HA!”. So, I think he did it. Or one of his “stans”.

        • Capital G

You’re like Yoda or some shit. Very observant you are. Seriously, I am truly impressed with your investigative skills.

        • http://tonygrands.blogspot.com Tony Grand$

At least you didn’t say Emperor; dude’s fugly, ha!

Thanks though. Been through a lot of shit man, I learned how to watch things, you know?

Life’s a movie & I’ll be damned if I’m not going to get my money’s worth.

  • G

    Wow….

The should just call this the “Ignorant Issue”. I love how they can sport all this jewelry, yet they all talk about is “how da hood starvin’”. Quit paying rent on your jewelry, you could feed multiple families. I think rappers now a days, especially in this economy should stop flashin’ the ice, smackin’ bitches, poppin’ bottles of Cris, and rollin’ up to the club on dubs, and start showing people what they really need to do…. Save money, support their family, no frivelous spending, what’s cooler than that? Tell them ways to accomplish something and feel good about themselves instead of sayin’ “Look what I got, and you’ll never get it”.

Jadakiss said it best, “Why do rappers lie in 85% of they rhymes”….

Rap is such a gimmick now…..

  • This is Hip-Hop

XXL, are you all serious????????? I’m dropping my subscription for you all doing this cover. I know you have to cover all forms of Hip-Hop, but damn!

  • George Clooney

You should bear in mind, XXL, that the demographic you’re targeting with these “artists” aren’t likely to be the literate type, and therefor, probably won’t be purchasing this issue, regardless. You’ve really shot yourselves in the foot with this one. The majority of the people that will actually have a copy of this travesty in their homes are going to be the poor loyal subscribers, for the most part. And that’s only because they won’t have had a choice. The rest of that shit’s getting left on the shelves and shipped back to Harris Publications. Dennis and Jonathan are not going to be happy about this, XXL. People are going to lose jobs over this little display in bad judgment. The heads at Rocawear are going to have second thoughts about buying anything in excess of 6 pages of ad space at the front next month. You’ll be lucky if you’re able to sustain a full classifieds section even. Remember the Jeezy & USD debacle? Come on, people. You might as well have just put Dinco D, Pudgee The Phat Bastard, Tairrie B and Lil Cease on the cover for an all out WHO GIVES A FUCK issue.

  • Mel

Been a fan of xxl mag 4 a min but why the fuck would you put soulja boy on the cover im mad, i like soulja boy he just should not b on the cover wit trap niggaz should have used yo gotti instead! But there’re hot right now!Burr!

  • ff1one@yahoo.com

I think the mark of a champion is somebody who goes in the champs building and take or forces their will on the opponent. That’s what the south has done. Yes, lyrics are depreciated, but so is Cocaine and Crack. Everything in life looses value such as the penny. Tru, none of the four on the cover is lyrical, but we live in a mircowave society. Despite these four rappers not being lyrical they do make good music. Go to a damn club or ride on a strip or go to a strip joint. Spend some time in strokers or magic city and u might understand the vibe. Umm, i guess xxl should’ve reported on Ortiz, papoose, sagion, murda mook or one of the many artist who have been waiting to blow. How about BLU? umm all of those artist are hot and lyrical; nevertheless, they don’t got the world or kids ear. With age you appreciate certain things more, but you gotta adapt to change or you will die. I mean i know people still rocking tapes and cds. come on the Ipod is great. You are not suppose to listen to these artist for their lyrics. Just enjoy it.

  • Jiggamane

Tha second best cover of tha year
    Killah was first

  • dolo

lol @ them inserting the cliche on the bottom ” ALL SWAGGED OUT!!!!” .. i had cancelled my subscription years ago with this ragazine. fflone@yahoo.com, when u become background music at strip club then you’re impact on the music is about as meaningful as the perfume on the chick gyrating to that nonsense.

  • Anti-Mainstream

4 of the WACKEST rappers today that nobody likes on one cover. Pretty much the whole image they portray on the cover summarizes what Rap is today. Non-Lyrical, non-talented, bling-blung bullshit!!!

Don’t nobody want to hear no deep lyrical shit all the time. Gucci deserve his shine. Nigga been droppin mixtapes for a while and his fanbase has grown tremendously. OJ and Shawty proably the worst out the group but that make the Trap Ayye been blowing up since last summer. SB got songs you play in the club and get it live aint nothin wrong with that; same for Shawty lo. I like my lyrical music sometime to but I can’t listen to no one dimensional style.

  • http://Xxl.mag Chop-Chpp

Gucci, OJ, Soulja! Them Nigga’s get a pass! But that whack ass Snawty H-O! Get’s no play in the whip! Checked OJ Da Juice Man, concert in Bama, he held it down! Damn shame what happened to the East Coast rap game.

  • George Clooney

It pains me to think that artists like Clipse, UGK or even Lupe or Ghostface on their own, don’t get featured on the cover of this magazine, but assholes like these guys, Rick Ross or Game (who’s made the cover like 5 times) get more than their fair share of shine.

You know, although The Source fell way the fuck off, they’ve at least shown glimpses of some renewed integrity with their recent cover choices (minus the Bow Wow/JD slip-up). This cover, on the other hand, proves that you guys are willing to whore yourselves out, with little in the way of regard for the culture, or an actual stance on what hip hop really needs.

No question, if this was 1990 and Hammer and Vanilla Ice were popping, XXL would probably give them the cover too.

  • f

ATL spittin hot garbage these days

  • JAY STONE

    No, No, No, Hell No!!!

I’m astonished that any of you would actually come out of your mouths to say anything in regards to this little bastard being a positive influence on children. Since when was telling children to shoot sperm on woman’s back cool? “Yah Bitch Yah”? This retard has a song called “Booty Meat”. Yes, this is exactly why he’s cool for kids. Any adult who purchased this album for their child should feel a sense of shame so deep and intense that their soul burns for the rest of their adult life. And to all of you broke ass people defending how another person gets his money, if people who legitimately have an issue with the fact that he is destroying the minds of others and making money off of youthful ignorance, then you must be riding dick for religiously stating that he’s getting paid.

All I know is, I DON’T GIVE FUCK HOW MUCH MONEY HE MAKES. (BTW, why y’all counting other people’s money? Fuck is up??) Y’all are always willing to accept some sub par shit as long as it generates capital. That’s why we can’t get anywhere. I bet many of you are the same whiny ass mothafuckas who swear Diddy is a sell out who destroyed Hip Hop, even though he brought something to the game that was missing. He made the Forbes list in 1994. Y’all ain’t on his shit. Instead you would rather swear Soulja Boy is impressive because he’s getting paid to rap and he’s young. That’s like swearing every nigga that picks up a basketball is the next Jordan. Stop being so fucking ignorant. Boy I hope none of you have kids. This is allowing your child to not live up to their potential. This is basically saying, “fuck a good education, as long as you get rich off of a poor one, who gives a damn?” Y’all make me sick.

Think of all of the things that generate income in this country. Why the hell are people acting like Soulja Boy accomplished something? He didn’t. He’s just another Black kid who decided to settle with success as a rapper. How the fuck can you commend that? Saying he’s only 17 is bullshit too. 17 years old is not an age where you are allowed to be this fucking stupid. And to everyone swearing he’s so smart… WHAT THE FUCK??? If he’s so smart, why the hell is he so ignorant? Why is none of his music nothing more than the same lines in repetition? And this isn’t even a Hip Hop argument. This is a Black people allowing others to coon the fuck out in front of the nation. It’s one thing to act like an asshole, but it’s a completely different thing to get recognition for it.

And let’s be clear, I’m young, but I’m not kicking the nigga for being successful. I hate ignorant shit. It’s like my kryptonite. And this is the biggest piece of that shit in the world. People say don’t be mad at what he’s doing, well fuck that shit. I’m mad because he’s some dumb ass boy who keeps finding ways to exploit himself (much like a prostitute) and everyone swears to the almighty savior that if you offer one piece of criticism you’re a hater. What are you seven? It’s not hate to want him to get something on his fucking mind. Why aren’t any young Black kids making computers? Little kids overseas can start charitable organizations, make breakthroughs in science, and do all sorts of helpful things for the world, and y’all are here celebrating this ultimate act of coonery?

If you want to be fair, celebrate all of the less than impressive shit being brought to us in the world. Celebrate our dropout rate. Celebrate Black kids having lower reading and math scores than white kids. Celebrate the poverty rate. Celebrate violent crime rising in most of our communities. Celebrate Black nicotine addition. Celebrate diabetes. Celebrate all of the fucked up shit that we allow to happen to ourselves, and then listen to Soulja Boy. Sure he’s not as bad as these other ones… Oh wait, but many of these things seem to coincide with that same guy. Fancy that. Maybe if we told kids better shit, we wouldn’t have to make it okay to listen to him. Maybe if he were actually doing something special, there wouldn’t be a question about whether he deserved any of what he has. Too bad he doesn’t deserve a damn thing, and damn sure not some respect for getting this money.

Fuck getting money if all you’re going to do is waste it. I’d rather be broke and intelligent than a rich dumb ass. Call me a hater, but who really gives a fuck about that word anymore? I swear some of you use that word more than folks use soap. Kiss my ass with calling me a hater, because at 17, my mother would have slapped all hell out of me if I messed up in school. She would have whooped my ass if I acted a fool in front of company. This little bastard acts a fool in front of the goddamn nation, and I’m not allowed to have an opinion? The world doesn’t work like that you dumb mothafuckas. Actions meet reactions. Success can easily be failure. And ignorant is ignorant. Don’t get that shit twisted. If you allow yourself to believe what he’s doing is right, then maybe you’re one of those people who sees nothing wrong with drug dealers. One of those people who saw nothing wrong with the slave trade. They made money too. All it cost was countless Black lives and it was done solely to weaken the race, and fatten a few pockets. At the end of the day, is he cutting you a check, or do you really think we’re attacking an innocent kid? Y’all don’t get this buck when our youth are slain in senseless acts of violence so shut the fuck up about dissing that bitch ass nigga Soulja Boy. And that’s word. I’m gone.

Peace, Hip Hop, and Purple Rain

Whats up with everybody talking about XXL whoring themselves out because OJ Da Juiceman, Soulja Boy, Shawty Lo, and Gucci on the cover? Thats a dumb ass statement…what XXL is doing is showcasing some of the hottest artist in the south….I’d rather see these dudes on the cover since they are fairly new and up and comming with new music then some washed up rapper from New York or California that ain’t got no buzz…Gucci, OJ, and Shawty Low get constant play in the midwest and the south, and as far as record sales go…the midwest and the south is all that matters….Ya’ll need to stop being biased to the eastcoast and let the south do this because the game is not comming back to the east or west coast anytime soon…

Boycott this bitch. Flip through it in the store and leave it there.

  • ff1one@yahoo.com

its sad cause everybody mad at these four group of rappers and their lack of lyrical talent, but fail to realize this is the futur e. if this is the future then what is there to be said about the past and the present. Its a number of talented lyrical rappers out there still grinding. Why aren’t we buying their music or on their websites everyday? XXl is buisness and they gotta move magazines in this age when people ain’t buying magazine, listening to the radio or watching tv because of the net. Somebody obviously is supporting soulja boy, so what does that say about ur kids? His subject matter came from him and his friends so what are ur kids doing in their spare time. In fact, what did u do at that age? et the lil kid have his shine.

As for gucci mane, Gucci been putting out songs as for this latest buzz, i don’t get it. Shawty Lo is hot, but not cover worthy. Honestly, its other rappers in the A that prob should’ve been on the cover, but on the outside looking in i can understand xxl selection.

    • RIGID

Come on homey, you went too deep. Bottom line this cover is garbage!!!!!! I’m not picking this one up,and it looks like a majority of the people on this site are not gone get a copy. I still buy magazines and cop the offical music, but the bottom line is THIS COVER IS GARBAGE!!!!

    • LB

Look, there’s talent that’s waiting to bust out into the game after these cats grab all that they can get then fade. And people will go to their web sites, buy their music, etc. Trust me man. The next hottest shit is strugglin tryin to make it indie right now.

  • jprint24

like it or not this is the NEW ATL… sorry … idk about shawty lo, but he is cool w/them. what is going to be funny is watching SB do his best Gucci Mane impression on his next album. SB is really lookin up to Gucci… Gucci and OJ are makin the trap say aye! sooo yeah like it or not this is the future for the next 2-4 years… notice they are still sayin “swag” like it isn’t old as hell… ugh i am moving lol

  • No Faith In HipHop

Everybody associated with this cover should be fined or put in jail. This is a wack as hell. Obama should tax the shit outta XXL for this cover. No wonder few rappers have gotten grammy’s. They allow this BULLSHIT to get put out.

  • RIGID

LOL, LMAO, This must be a joke!!!! Come on XXL DAMN!!!!!!! All these dudes suck, and I’m from the south.

  • Braille

well….Im still going to get the magazine even though most of the people don’t agree including myself. I was shocked to see them on the cover but hey niggas…..its still xxl im ridin (II) pause no homo

  • Michelle S.

[oj da juiceman] AYE! [/oj da juiceman] LOL

    What the duece!?

  • Nate

I should just calm down. Southern Sovereign said it all above.

    FUCK ALL YA”LL.

  • Nate

XXL’s requirements to get a cover.

    1. Live or claim a popular music industry city.
Right now that’s the South preferably ATL, or Houston if you can’t be in ATL.

    2. Have a major label signing or some Internet Dance Song Buzz.

    3. Borrow or purchase some ICE that costs most or more than a major label advance.

    4. Just sell 5, 10, or 30K 1st week. If you sell 5-25 you can’t get a SOLO cover but you are good enough to jump in the pics with other guys. All you need if you fit criteria 1-3 for a solo cover is to have a debut album sell 30K
now first week. Then you are a “GREAT HIPHOP ARTIST” according to new XXL standards…

Most recent COVER artist album debut #’s:
Soulja BitchBoy: 46,000 #43 on charts debut week
Shawty Ho: 31,017 (3/2/08) mult sales by .8 to get an accurate count of what it would be or what his delayed (now June est) new album will do 1st week.
Gucci Mane- 17,100. Now that’s just SO impressive after all that time in jail. Lines round the block anticipating his new release…
OJ the Juiceman- I’m sorry, can’t provide the numbers. You see he doesn’t even HAVE A DEBUT album out yet- but XXL gives him a cover.

    • LB

Man G, I feel where you’re anger is comin from. But don’t get mad, get EVEN! Network with ambitious underground or indie labels, publishers, distributors, management, and marketing firms/people. Work hard as fuck to generate a buzz and BAM, make all the shit come together through a package deal. THEN, you’ll get a call from a rep from XXL, Vibe, King, The Source, or whoever you want or, it’ll be easier for you to reach out to them and have them reach back.

  • !

How come the people from the south don’t come on here and say something? is it that they don’t buy XXL?, or is it because they don’t have computers?

  • Will

WTF XXL?…You all cannot be serious, these have to be the worst rappers of ALL TIME. None of these Negroes rap about anything

OJ: “Quarter brick, half a brick aye”

Gucci Mane: “Gucci Mane la flare im so icy”…WTF?

Soulja Boy: “turn my swag on” ” Yah bitch yah”

Shawty Low: ” They call me dun dun”

this cover looks like the line up of a special ed basketball team….

  • RJ

You guys actually put Soulja Boy on a cover.

    I’m speechless.

    XXL fucked up.

  • http://xxlmag.com Monster Bj

Yo these fools are ok. i mean i listen to about 3 of em. But we all can agree that neither one of these niggas are lyricist. I think artist who only have the skill of rhyming deserve to be on the cover of XXl. They iight just iight but not for xxl.

  • Jessica

I used to get XXL every month like clock work, but I haven’t picked one up in months. And I’m definitely not picking up this months with this 4 on it. Shawty Lo is about the only one on there with any talent. Gucci Mane sucks compared to Jeezy. Soulja Boy is great..if you’re 10 and into the bubblegum “rap” stuff. The issues the past few months haven’t been worth dropping $5 on at all. The magazine has definitely gone downhill.

  • nodib

If you guys want 4 real artists to represent the new face of hip hop why not get dudes that can spit. slaughterhouse is what you need. crooked i, joe budden, royce and joell ortiz. thats the future not these guys.

  • chucky

i think people should think of it as something different as opposed to semothing awful. No they don’t have much talent when it comes to lyrics. but they are doing their thing. and its catchy. you cant think hip hop is only one thing..there are different kinds.from mos def to gucci..you may not like them all..but you gotta respect them

  • Trey8
