Koch Signs 5 New Hip-Hop Labels To Distribution Deal

Koch Entertainment has just inked five labels, whose collective roster includes such rap acts as Bun B and his Middle Fingaz crew, MJG from veteran Memphis duo 8 Ball and MJG and former Ultramagnetic MC Kool Keith.

Under the agreement, the indie powerhouse will now distribute all releases from Nina Easton’s IMG International/404 Music Network, Tenacity Records, Unruly Records, Greenstreets Entertainment and Doc Music Group.

IMG is known for its Southern signees Boo (of Boo & Gotti), the D Boyz (Lac & Stone) and MJG, among others. Tenacity’s lineup includes a handful of DJs including the late K-Swift and King Tutt, both from the Balitimore, MD area. Greenstreets has put out material by underground standouts Kool Keith, Sunz of Man and Vordul Mega from Cannibal Ox, while Doc Music Group is home to Paul Wall affiliates the G.R.I.T. Boyz, Lil Kano and Bun B & Middle Fingaz, all hailing from Houston, TX.

In related news Koch Records recently appointed Dipset capo Jim Jones as their new vice president of urban A&R. Under his new position, Jones’ first release will be by Dipset member Juelz Santana and his Skull Gang. – Elan Mancini

All that shit is trash!! Didn’t even make it to the curb on garbage day!! They should do a compilation album called “Garbage Day”!!

  • Rodjilius

dam dat must be Bun B and Mddl Fngz is gonna finally drop an album i like the looks of this

  • macdatruest

Would you rather sell 100,000+ in your region and consistently drop albums to be able to amass some wealth. or would you rather get a shiny ass suit and a hype williams video before your album even drop so you can start out in debt??Then if you dont do phenominal in the first week, you in the locker room for the next two years… I would rather have my fans make me who i am, not the label’s marketing execs. Koch helps the artists who still feel they can make it off the strength of their music be heard. I can respect that. Labels sign talented niggas, never release they albums, and the fans or the artist can’t say shit. Like Stat Quo on Shady. All these years waiting for shit. Now he got three new “mixtapes” that are free. I know he coulda used some money for all that work-but I guess the “Major Label” was the payoff. Labels pissin in a bottle tellin they artist, “Here, Cristal on me” makin them think they winning when they being cheated

  • bucsormore

I FEEL YALL SOMEWHAT I MEAN YEA KOCH IS NICE FOR THOSE ARTIST WHO WANTS TO TRY TO DO IT THIER WAY BUT NOW A DAYS NIGGAS AINT SELLIN MAJOR NOR INDEPENDENT THEN LOOK AT THE ARTIST BESIDES BUN AND MJG WHO IS THEY AND EVEN WITH BUN AND MJG THEY AINT GONT SELL I MEAN ITS COOL TO DROP WHEN U WANT TO BUT WAS THE USE IF U REALLY AINT GONT SELL ITS REALLY NO DIFFERENCE ID WANNA BE ON A MAJOR LIKE UNIVERSAL AT LEAST IF U COME HARD WITH THE SINGLES AND A SLICK ALBUM THEY WILL SUPPOR U (LIKE WAYNE T.I. KANYE U HAVE TO PUT DOWN AND HAVE THE SINGLES EVEN BOW WOW OR SOLJA BOY FUCK THEM BOTH BUT THEYLL ALWAYS HAVE THAT LABEL BEHIND THEM CAUSE THEY SELL) EVEN IF U SELL ON KOCH THEY DONT HAVE THE MONEY TO TAKE U TO THE TOP IF SO THE WHOLE H TOWN WOULD HAVE STAYED INDEPENDENT SOONER U GONT WANT TO BE BIG SO EVENTUALLY UR GOING TO WANNA LEAVE THAT GRAVEYARD NOT TO MECHUN JONES RUNNING THE LABEL IM GOOD DEF JAM SOUNDS WAY BETTER JUST SIGNING IS PROMOTION U PUT TOGETHER SOME REAL MUSIC AND NOW UR LUDA OR JEEZY

    • macdatruest

Sound good, but actually its a bunch of bullshit. Just to prove it to you, you said bow wow and soulja boy will always have a label behind them-I guarantee Bow Wow get dropped and Soulja Boy after Tax time-before Summer. But I say it’s bullshit also cause I seen Koch albums at Best Buy and Walmart, but Koch knows the significance of the small markets. The local lil music store that eveybody in the town go to is considered the “small” market. and a lot of smaller stores aint registered with soundscan.Local stores-Thats where most niggas buy they music in my town, Best Buy is too far out with no underground shit or mixtapes.

So you think these niggas aint out here eatin’, you need to learn about niggas like E-40, J.T. Tha Bigga Figga, Yukmouth and other Bay Area and West Coast artists who RICH and been indy for years. West Coast rappers can go gold in they own region without nationwide promotion. If I’m Indy and I sell 500,000 and make 6 dollars off a 10 dollar CD, I give Koch they 4$(40%) I just made 3 MILLION DOLLARS.

Now my guy over on Def Jam-They did him like Joe Budden, spent a million dollars off top on national advertising, hailed him as the “next big thing” since Hov, got him on 106 an Park all that. So, like Joe Budden he owed a 1 MILLION overhead off top for advertising, and he’s on a major so he’s making 1 dollar per album. Now up in the Def Jam boardroom, they’re not hardcore fans of rap they are about making a profit. On major labels, all effectiveness is judged by first week sales-the strongest week. So my guy sold like Joe Budden, about 100,000 his first week, next week about 90,000. But he can’t even pocket 190,000 because all the expenses “Def Jam” convinced him were in the interest of his project-he gotta pay for.

They pulled advertising to cut cost, now even though he’s on a major he’s not getting that major promo-which is what most artists complain about “Majors” nowadays a lack of push for their projects. To add insult to injury, he has no release date in sight for another project-and no spins on the radio equal no royalties. Now he 800,000 in debt tryna file bankruptcy so the label can write off the debt at Tax time.

Koch won because they realize by signing a label your signing a functioning team of people with a vision. I know Def Jam wish they was a distribution company right now-cause when you sign one nigga-you gotta build a team around him, find beats, and basically create a “artist” out a nigga wit a notebook and a dream. Most niggas with they own label are grinders, as opposed to niggas tryna sign with majors, they are dreamers. Some major label exec, somewhere, know I’m da truest right now

      • pitbull

real pep real words when spooken. ima grinder. check out marko aka youngsta monsta from baton rouge. real shit.

  • http://governmentnames.blogspot.com Al

Fact check: the Baltimore-based label of K-Swift and King Tutt that signed to Koch is Unruly Records, not Tenacity, and they are a dance/club music label, not hip hop. Also, they signed their deal with in summer 2008, and already released their first CD with Koch distribution, K-Swift’s Greatest Hits, last month. XXL basically copied a slightly inaccurate Billboard story, and added some new errors of their own. Keep reaching for that rainbow of journalistic excellence!

  • bucsormore

yea mac nice statistics examples to but come in this modern day with these young ears they love those cornballs bow dance boy i think white see the money with them ringtone sellin ass niggas but budden hit a brick cause he was trying to make market album i like budden but that cd wasnt the shit if the execs picked his music then the label should look at its self but good point tho 6 or 10 sounds better and not shit onur dudes but E40 and them cool off da mic but on hes not a seller thats his best spot to be but if u make those lil single type songs and go hard on major u will sell its like the nba and cross seas ball yea its money over there but playing against bums its not hard thats y they come over here to play the best where u have to earn respect and money sure its raw to have money no matter u hit or miss on koch but that dont mean u deserve it it really be trash i bet the shows be ass cause nobody likes the cd ur only having crowds i ur hometown even if that but say u get on the major and put it down
