RUMOR: Jay-Z Wants $100 Million for Record Label?

Since leaving his post as President and CEO of Def Jam at the end of 2007, Hova has had everybody in the industry working overtime to guess what his next big move will be. Many have speculated that he will utilize his connections and valuable insider knowledge of the music industry to launch his own label. Today, the New York Post’s Page Six gossip column spoke to an unidentified insider who claims that Jay-Z wants a whopping $100 million for his rumored Carter Music Group imprint.

“He wants a label to give him $100 million for the Carter Music Group and provide for overhead, development and digital investment. It’s crazy. He wants the labels to basically be his venture capital fund – but unlike a venture cap, they won’t get 50 percent. This is not the ’90s anymore.”

Is $100 million a reasonable sum for a proven hit maker like Jay, or is it far too much to ask in a climate where most artists are struggling to go Gold?

Damn nigga wat about the Roc???

  • ATL = All Trannies Live

Investing 100 mill in a music venture has to be one of the riskiest moves anybody can make. Wish him luck, but I doubt if anybody gone put up that much money the way albums are selling.

That’s just to much unless he can promise Beyonce and Kanye will come with him.

  • JAY STONE

That`s why i like this nigga!!It`s all about the dollar.

  • moresickaMC

I dont think even Jay can pull 100 mill into todays climate.

hip hop is dead, why invest in it?

“Im overcharging niggas for what they did to the Cold Crush” – Hov

The only way to find your true value is to ask for way too much money. The opposition will low-ball, you go sky high, and you will meet somewhere near the truth…….

To those saying what about the ROC? I recall him selling that to Def Jam if Im not mistaken. Plus he had def jam screw all their artists over plus all of his other venture labels folded too. ROC LA FAMILIA? yeah right, lets hope BAD BOY LATINO doesn’t fold just as fast. Plus he never had anyone that I could see signed to his CARTER LABEL unless when every artist coming out of def jam had the executive produced by CARTER ADMINISTRATION stamp on their CD, thats what that meant, if not then who would buy a blank label with no product (proven artists). A digial label would gross so much more $$$. Think of no packaging or distribution costs. Just a huge server to host your artists music downloads and few IT people in the dept to pay, plus online advertising and your set. Everything is going digital and portable. The times of sitting at home in the living room are slowing down and everything is “on demand” now. what we want, when we want it. I say Jay starts a good advertising agency. No matter how bad the economy, let every other failing and successful company pay you to promote their products or service. and spread it like butter to websites, tv commercial spots, cellphone advertisments, etc. you can dominate the digital side of the whole economy. Whether its your comcast or qwest TV signal or you on your iphone tryin pick up mall tail. Plus then he can use his own company to promote whatever joint venture or solo deal he does, it’ll cost him low money=no money. Thats what HOV likes anyway is the attention. Either way though, I thought HOV said “Money Ain’t A Thing” If so, quit living closer to the devil and start livin closer to god homie. By the way he said he should have given his time and money to katrina victims, even after his song he surely did neither and only 1 million to the cats in africa for a playground waterpump, lame homey. He probably writes that shit off on taxes too, lol. Just tellin it how it is.

  • GAME OVER

  • kd

jay-z is the man.. he’s going up against young people who would rather dance or hear a lot of puch lines rather than to hear rapper tell his story.. it looks like where back in the 80s again its over for the thug rapper its all about a dance

  • Vicious Seiger

Sorry, but I wouldn’t give Jay-Z 100 million dollars to gamble with. The ROC didn’t produce any major talent besides Kanye. Major meaning selling major units in stores. I like Free, Bleek & Beans but none of them were polished enough to crossover and sorry to say that is what sells. Investing 100 million dollars in something usually means you are looking to earn at least 10 to 100 times the initial investment and the ROC at it’s height wasn’t even worth half of that (100 Million).

  • Str8Gutta

100 million? Wit that kinda money, he could invest in BRONXRAP.COM!!!!
