LINK: Jermaine Dupri Takes A Stand Against Apple

In his latest post on his Huffington Post blog, Island Records Urban Music president Jermaine Dupri commends Jay-Z for refusing to sell his album in single tracks on Apple’s iTunes Music store. He goes on, in a detailed rant, to explain why digital music sales sites like iTunes are disrespecting the people who create the actual music. He raises a lot of interesting questions about how the industry is adapting to (or in this case, resisting) the changes that digital, internet-based music consumers are forcing on them. According to Dupri, the consumers have too much control now, and the corporate music entities need to regain the upper hand:

More artists and producers are gonna take back control of how their art is sold because [Jay-Z's] strategy has paid off. Maybe Hova coulda sold another 100,000 to 200,000 units by playing it iTunes’ way, but he still had the number one album last week. He STILL sold 425,000 units. Even more, he’s proven you can still sell an album without those guys.

Jay made everyone realize that iTunes taking what we give them and doing what they want with it isn’t the way it has to be. He put the light on and made other people realize, “Oh these guys are just selling our music, they ain’t making it.” If anything, WE made iTunes. It’s like how we spent $300,000 to $500,000 each on our videos and MTV and BET went ahead and built an entire video television industry off of our backs. We can’t let that happen again. These businesses exist solely because of our music. So if we as artists, producers and label executives stand up, those guys at Apple can either cooperate, or have nothing for people to buy and download on their iPods.

Apple thinks that’s never gonna happen. They think that we as the record industry will never stick together. But Universal sells one out of every three records. All it’ll take is for Warner Music to say, “You know what, I’m with you,” for us to shut ‘em down. No more iPods! They won’t have nothin’ to play on their players! We can take back the power if we’re willing to sacrifice some sales to make our point.

Record sales are going to continue to decline no matter if you sell music in a singles or album format on Itunes. As more people come to own computers the less music will be sold in any format. Why would I pay for something I can get for free. I’m poor and so is almost everyone else I know. So if I can save 10-15 bucks by downloading why shouldn’t I? The quality of music is so iffy who wants to take a chance anymore? And JD is one of the main dudes who contributed to this climate with the “success” of Dem Franchise Boys. They couldn’t rap they’re way out of a wet paper bag.

dumb ass dinosaur. Put out a whole album worth of good songs and maybe people will buy it. He’s part of the reason why we are where we are. What happened to making music for art first and business second? That’s why there are so many ringtone rappers now. The labels made it come to this. You can’t fight the future homey – figure out a way to survive in the new music biz.

    What a fucking idiot.

What iTunes, MTV and BET do is spread your music to a wider audience. Why would would someone spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a music video just to have a select few die hard fans watch your dumb ass diamonds and Cristal videos with other illiterate monkeys throwing cash. Stop complaining about how corporations are fucking shit up and do something besides not having iTunes sell your shitty ass CD’s.

This guy is a fucking CEO or was at least not up to date on this jive ass turkeys career but i do know he is rich as fuck and shouldn’t be complaining about a fucking thing. If i saw his little ass on the street id probably slap him.

You know the messed up thing is that the internet does fuck up the game. People wanna blame the crappy music thats being made, but thats not the reason. There has always been crappy music and it used to sell. Master P’s other artist that were way crappier than him used to go damn near if not platinum. The difference was you didn’t have a guy at the gas station with the cd for 2 dollars. So you took the chance that you wouldn’t like it and spent the twelve bucks.

Like 3000 says, “so if I come to ya job and take ya corn on the cob and take a couple kernels off it that would be alright with you? hell no, exactamundo”

  • MR. SYDEVIEW

What JD is saying is truth. what happened to the days where you could go and cop the newest joint from your favorite artist. Now you have to pretty much have to own a Mp3 player in order to get the newest album. In the past few years we all have watched our fav. music spot shut down because of decreased music sales vs. internet. Honestly, I miss that shit and wish that alot of spots would reopen so I could enjoy the ambiance associated with music shopping. Yeah, your music can reach a larger audience via the web, but what about those who cannot access the net. You want to slow illegal downloading…. Shuut that shit down. Artist unite and take control of the way your art is distributed.

malcolm x, said in a speech, that back in slavery some slave would die for there slave masters. if the master caught a cold, the slave would say, “what’s wrong master, we sick” the corporate music monopolies are sick, and one of there slaves are worried about them.

    • DB100

      WELL SAID SOILDER!!

  • Jason Murk

First I’d like to say… how the fuck is selling 425K copies a good thing for Jay-Z? That has got to be jigga’s weakest opening sales number ever. And his understudy, Kanye, just sold DOUBLE that number just a couple months ago!

Second thing I’d like to add… itunes isn’t fucking the game up.

Limewire is fucking the game up. (Why buy your shit when I can get it for free?).

Fruity Loops, M-Box, Acid Pro, Reason4, Cubase, etc… is fuckin the rap game up. (Why buy your shit when I can make my own shit for free?)

Weak ass MC’s without anything intelligent to talk about are fucking the rap game up.

If “MC Get Busy” is rapping about how hard he is because he robs niggas… won’t it make me even harder if I rob this nigga for his music?

If you’re not selling your shit on itunes, then I might as well download it off of limewire for free. And after I download it, i’m gonna make a beat even hotter than your shit.

    • MR. SYDEVIEW

Truth spoken, I’d have to agree with you in that aspect. Limewire is FUCKING the game up with the free downloads. M.C’z (muthafuckin’ copycats) are also fouling the game up with there lack of lyrical content. Back in the days there was a requirement to posess skills if you handled the mic. Now, guess you have to be funded by illegal funds and have a degree in Ignornace and Bullshit. And if you make a tight ass beat, dont worry you’ll hear 1500 versions of your shit because some cats also lack imagination and creativity. The cornerstones of any type of “art”.

ok JD let me shine a little light on you shiny bald head . Jay-z had a hot album. so he can afford to do that . these tv company made yall. see the problem was when you was screaming money aint a thing and buying bentley and shit . shay whitey was stacking his money up and opening up media companies. all of them was sticking to getting putting there money together they looked at the forest instead of the tree
    ……………………………………
According to Dupri, the consumers have too much control now, and the corporate music entities need to regain the upper hand:

ok JD HMMMMM maybe because the consumers buy records which enables you to buy bentleys lol

you sound dumb …….the record company wanted to save money it cuts cost on manufactering and distrubtion…. plus alot of shit yall put out is wack . yall took the budget money . put it in your pocket and cut corner. no you wanna cry when yall should have reivested to a business that you use the companies for .

It’s like how we spent $300,000 to $500,000 each on our videos and MTV and BET went ahead and built an entire video television industry off of our backs. We can’t let that happen again.
    ………

you sound really dumb with this one. ummmmm…. mtv made alot of artist if it wasnt for them you dumb ass would still be on video music box. and bet was the only one that would play your black ass. plus when bob johnson sold it it helped yall make money money . Opera is like the only other black person that owns a media company ……. wake up JD . play like the little kid with the jurl curl who was break dancing in the whodii video lmao

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSvhLuXz1QI ReagabBabyFunny

NAPSTER anyone, are we supposed to feel sorry for the artists now or rather the labels that gouged us for years. I know since I was a dj who didn’t belong to any record pools, but rather spent hours pouring thru crates and bins at places like Rock N Soul or Fat Beats. I said it when the asses were trying to sue Napster back then DRE & METALLICA make a deal or it’s gonna be the Wild, Wild West of downloading. But those dicks at the labels were so square about technology that they couldn’t predict the obvious future. The stupid movie companies didn’t learn either so like Cube said “Fuck All Y’all!!!”

  • http://www.rizzleworld.blogspot.com allnice

JD has a point though. Albums don’t get respect like they used to and the quality of songs have slipped because people just want to download a few songs they like off the Internet. They aren’t in it for the full experience of the album anymore. If the music industry combines to negotiate with Apple and iTunes about how they can handle an artist’s content, I think Apple, us consumers, and the music industry will definitely benefit.

The flip side to that argument is that people might not want to listen to a full length album anymore because it is easier to find what you want on the Internet. Also, independent artists can get a larger share of the market than before using the Internet, so a few rappers can’t dominate the scene like they used to even though they can sell pretty decent numbers.

I think that hip hop is too obsessed with numbers and not content anyway. JD seems to understand that content needs a boost, but talking about Jay-Z is a bad example because he is an old rapper that has already made concept albums in the past. The new and some of old guys have to step up and take rap seriously again or else people aren’t going to be interested regardless of if they have their songs on iTunes or not.

  • http://www.theunderwriters.blogspot.com THE UNDERWRITER

The music business is falling apart. Ipod or cassette tape, vinyl or CD.

Nobody buys shit anymore. Everybody is broke, but we all have friends with CD burners and internet connects.

    You’re all welcome.

Jermanine need to sit his ass down somewhere. It’s about the consumer dickhead, not some straight asshole who made a song and think he rules the world. It is not that fuckin serious, that’s what some of these artist need to put in the brain. This niggah is actually saying that the big corporations need to take control from the consumer. This niggah can’t even get off with Janet Jackson, and he’s straight ass. As for me, anything that gives the consumer more control, I’m for. Yall make money because of the fans dickhead. Motherfuckers is just mad because they can’t go platinum on any given day. It’s over, yall niggahs was raping the consumer. jay Z started that platinum bullshit, and yall went with that. He set the bar for that. So when an artist come with his music, he reaching for that, he not concerned about the consumer. That is why half the shit that is coming out is straight garbage, cause niggahs ain’t giving us they all, they giving us half ass bullshit songs, cause they only caring about what’s in the consumers pockets, not what’s on they mind. Jermaine suck a dick. And when the big corporations take back control from the consumer, what the fuck does he think the big corporations are going to do with the artists? Niggahs got to handle that. It’s no more caking up without putting in real work Jermaine. Half of you motherfuckers can’t even play an instrument or read a note. it’s motherfuckers going to college studying music and aint’t getting half the money you bitchass niggha is getting. Stop fuckin complaining, or better yet take your money and go invest it somewhere other than music. Most of them is a fucking disrespect to the real poor people that is struggling just to stay decent people. Huh!? Not grinding and complaining cause they need some more money to buy a platinum chain, or to go trick and make it rain in front of the next asshole like Diddy or whatever. It’s disgusting. He come from minorities in this country, and he want the consumer to have less control. Fuck outta here. That’s what money do to us, turn us into thinking like the fuckin establishment. Jermaine fuck you, and Jay for that matter.

  • jd is dumb

jd is a dumbass. The only reason why Jay sold so many albums w/o itunes cuz he’s jay-z. If it were anyone else, no would get their bullshit album for one song.

It’s funny how all these so-called Hustlers\Gangstas who supposedly broke and still break all these laws wanna complain about people downloading they tracks illegally.

Yeah right!!! Haha good one Jermaine… what a clown it isn’t going to happen iTunes isn’t the enemy haha clowns man… the whole industry changed awhile ago this dude better get with it and stop crying…

  • HHS1982

Most of you guys are missing his point on this. The problem Jermaine has is the way iTunes is presenting a body of work by an artist “just a collection of singles”. We all know the classic albums we love where not only are the beats/rhymes/concepts are tight… the sequencing is finely arranged for the album to flow the way the artist meant it to be. I remember burning a copy of Beanie Sigel’s The Reason and the sequenceing was all cluster fucked by whoever uploaded it, the joint just didn’t sound right! So i found the actual tracklist. arranged the songs properly and voila! the shit stays in my car for almost 2 months. Now the same can’t be said for most albums; a Yung Joc/Franchise Boyz/D4L album in any sequence is one shit sammich after the other, but AG floooooows, Ready to Die, Life After Death, Reasonable Doubt, Blueprint, Black Album, No Way Out, and several others are full of hot joints but the WHOLE is GREATER than the PARTS! I do agree that the music industry does have to step there game up as far as content in concerned, but at the same time whether you’re Young Hov or Young Joc you have the right as an artist to have your work preented in the manner your originally intended it to be.

  • Nor Cal Mufuckas

I still say fuck all these lame ass RICH ASS rappers complaining about low sales. Motherfuckers get paid for everything like ring tones and other different endorsements. All they have to do is stay out of jail and they get a fat paycheck every month for themselves and they family. Fuck any rapper thats been doing it for more than 5 years and still relevant. Shit even Ja Rule still got money.

  • Frilla Mane

JD doesn’t know that you can still download music and put it on your itunes. DUMBASS.

  • daesonesb

I seriously doubt that artists are going to ALL band together and withhold their product from itunes.

Jay is a special case, as he is high up at def jam, but the average artist on a major record deal couldnt tell his label to not sell his shit on itunes. They wouldn’t listen.

Why? Because labels like sony know that if they dont release shit on itunes, then they are going to be at a disadvantage compared to other labels.

Also, the consumer has the real power here. Jermaine Dupris is assuming that we are gonna keep buying records if they stop coming out on itunes. Nah. People will go back to downloading and bootlegging.

    Dude is wrong here.

  • chano

malcolm x said in a speech, that back in slavery, some slave would die for the slave masters. if the master got sick, the slave would say “what’s wrong master…. limewire killed it. he’s an idiot for saying it was itunes though. at least on itunes you still actually have to pay for what you get. why would an artist spend 2 mill to make an album he’s not gonna make any money off of because everyone is gettin it for free? all you people downloading shit for free sit there and complain about how shitty the albums are now. its your fucking fault. just recently i read an article about this lady that got fined $220,000 for having close to 300 songs illegally downloaded. so when you jump on your limewire think about that. you might save yourself 15 bucks but nothing comes for free in this world. its not gonna be the artists that do it but their labels. the labels are starting to feel the sting and theyre gonna come for their money sooner or later. you can bet on that.

  • somdweller

The thing that these rap artist need to understand is that their genre is for young people! You have 30-40 year old rappers still wanting to make records for teenagers and they wonder why nobody buys the records from the store anymore. Teenager’s don’t do that! Look at Alicia Keys. She’s damn near at 800,000 in the first week without any publicity stunts involved . Cater your music a little towards the demographic who still go to record stores to buy cd’s! I don’t see that happening in the future though.

Jay zs album was no where near as good as his last and even that 1 was TRASH.As 4 Jermaine,WHO THE FUCK IS HE???!!! Oh yeah the man who unleased BOW WOW on the world. The Simon Cowell (pop idol) of hip hop.I HAT YOU YOU DWARF.Fuk UR UGLY WIFE 2

ya tell people pirate the music and you dont get shit im tired of these f##$%^’s with their necklace that cost more than every thing i own bitching about a few dollars

Its funny that the only time you ever hear JD talk to the media on a real business level is when Doug Morris sends him as a pawn to fight his war against Apple, as if Apple cares about Itunes when in fact their money maker is the IPOD which has little dependency on Itunes since its filled with mostly illegal downloaded and ripped from CD music. What if Itunes didn’t exist at all? That would have been about 2 billion dollars in revenue off the table for the labels so they should be fortunate.

If the only type of new artists the majors can break out nowadays is single/ringtone -driven then its complete hypocrisy blaming Apple for allowing the consumer to cherry pick singles off an album. Sorry, can’t have it both ways. The problem for the labels is they cannot produce anymore new Jay-Z’s because they killed artist development once the media became consolidated back in 1996 (thanks to Bill Clinton). Why build legitimate artists when you can just drown the radio and MTV with payola money? When Funk Master Flex has to dedicate an hour every night to 90′s music you know there’s a real problem with new quality content.

Well now its over and little kids don’t let the red carpet, VIP industry parties fool you…they’re done. What they’re doing now is trying to go out looking like “poor innocent victims” when in fact they’ve been getting away with running a plantation-style slavery system that leaves about 92% of all signed artist unrecouped and broke while the few on top stash most the bread. A new artist signing to the label thinking they have a shot at Jay Z type of success is delusional. All they will do is gangsta your pub money, merch money and show money in a crooked ass 360 deal while your shelved getting laughed at on message boards.

Why don’t JD talk about all the licensing money the labels been getting from cutting deals with You Tube, Imeem, etc ? What about all that RIAA settlement money from them suing Limewire, Groker, etc? How much of that shit is going back to the artists and producers/songwriters? No he won’t say shit about that because he knows the labels are doing a behind the scene “digital robbery” as they take the last pennies before the Titanic fully submerges.

Warner Music stocks is tanking around 5-7 bucks a share, down 60% plus for the year but you won’t hear that kind of talk on your favorite hip hop websites because god forbid you little “hip hop nigglets” actually woke up and took business OWNERSHIP of your culture. Instead they purposely pay off these sites to keep the rumor, gossip bullshit in front of your face. WAKE UP

VERY soon the new generation of tech-saavy, respect-the-music-culture entrepreneurs will create new business models that will capitalize on the tremendous demand for QUALITY music and it will have no dependency on ego-maniacs like Doug Morris, Jimmy Iovine and Lyor Cohen. It will be independent with the content creators maintaining full control of their works connecting directly with the audience in a organized fashion. They hate the fact of losing control. Sorry JD your going to have to down grade from the G4 to first class on Delta…you will live.

let’s keep it real, apple has not stopped anyone from buying any of jermaine’s personal catalog. his first album sold a million copies only due to jay z, nas, dmx……

besides, it is not like he can “break” any real artist.

  • DJ DaveLee

every time you download you are killing your computer. So all this free music isn’t really free because your always going to get viruses with that package. You can’t keep on f disking your computer. They need to stop the people that are selling the albums on the street.

I do not agree with Jermaine Dupree!

All it is is that the execs did not pay attention or care about the technology and how it was evolving, it changed from vinly to cassete and from cassette to cd, the artist and the companies got spoiled off of being able to charge X amount of dollars for the physical format in which the music is given to the consumer. This is what happened to the industry it evolved in a way that the companies and the artist can’t charge $15.00 for a $1.50 cd anymore. The music is still there, the vinyl evolved into the internet and the artist and the record companies can’t control that.

I seen it coming years ago, what they should have been trying to do instead of trying to beat each other out for market share! (record companies) they should worked together to purchase and develop the technology such as media players and Mp3 format to retain their control because that’s what it’s all about.

The “control” over how content is distributed, this is the music business.

While they were competing for market share and control of the industry no one ever payed attention to the technology that was evolving that they very well could have bought and controlled but now it’s to late the consumers got the technology for free and now it’s to late to “control” it!.

I personally am for the internet and the “control” technology that allows me as a consumer to purchase what I want how I want it, I am not against going to the store to purchase a $15.00 cd but what if I, as a consumer don’t want the entire body of work, why can’t I be able to purchase the part of the body of work that I am interested in? most cd’s only have about 2-3 good songs on them so if the math is correct you just made me purchase 2-3 songs for $15.00. Who has the “control” you or me?.

Yes it’s your art but it’s my money and as consumer I like the fact of having technology that allows me to have “control” over how I purchase my entertainment.

    you snooze you lose!

I forgot who said it but they were exactly right when they said that JD contributed to the I-tunes climate. Dem franchise boyz I purchased that one song from I tunes and if it didn’t exist I would have just downloaded it for free. 99 cents is always more than nothing especially when you multiply it by 100,000. The problem with JD’s approach is that he is coming at business the same way that people approach music. Music is reactionary, it is the reaction to a feeling or rather the lack there of. Business has got to be proactive. It has got to be one step ahead of the curve or you’re just struggling to keep up.

Jay-z’s decision to pull American Gangster from I tunes feels like more of an artisitc one. At this stage in his career Jay is about business and money but also about art and this album is a like a book it tells a story, an author wouldn’t just sell you the middle of her book. JD needs to watch out because he sounds like a petulant child.

Yes, I tunes would not exist if it weren’t for music, but right now the music industry would be near bankruptcy if it weren’t for Starbucks, Itunes, and Ipods. People have been illegally downloading music for nearly a decade. The music industry’s answer to staying ahead was to try to sue everyone, when that didn’t work they just started bitching. And if we went back to the CD format, where the fuck would people by them? There’s only Circuit City, Best Buy and Wal-Mart( And they don’t sell any good rap music there). Instead of taking a step back the music industry should take a step forward. Learn something from Radio Head, shit learn something form Lil Wayne. Learn something from Itunes. Innovate, and people will buy more complete bodies of work from Itunes if record companies and artists weren’t just making songs so that they could ring on phones.
