RZA Wins 1st Annual Chess Kings Invitational Tournament

On Saturday (October 13), over 500 were in attendance at the San Francisco Design Center as Wu-Tang founder RZA took home the belt for winning the first annual Chess Kings Invitational, a tournament presented by the Hip-Hop Chess Federation (HHCF). While high school teams from around California’s Bay Area competed for over $10,000 worth of scholarships, hip-hop celebrities like RZA, GZA, Sunspot Jonz, Casual and others spoke about the game’s virtues, before competing for the coveted belt.

In the celebrity competition, each finalist played a total of five rounds, until an undefeated RZA met Monk (a member of Wu-Tang-affiliated group Black Knights) in the final round. “RZA pulled off the chess version of Rumble in the Jungle,” says HHCF founder Adisa Banjoko. “It was the classic chess scenario of the student going after the teacher.” After an intense game, RZA finally called “Checkmate” after trapping Monk’s king in a back rank mate move.

In related news, the HHCF plans to hold the “All Queens Invitational” at the end of February 2008, which will feature some of the top female chess players from around the world alongside hip-hop’s leading ladies.

I was there yo!! Monk was all over RZA for real. Then the Abbot made the chess move heard around the world. I’m going to anything these folks throw straight up.

Besides the win, they had a panel with RZA, Rakaa from Dilated, a professor named Daeem Shabazz and that dude from the movie Searching for Bobby Fischer. They kicked so much science man, cats could not even deal.

My sister and me got a free Chessmaster game and a book on chess and life.

HHCF’s Chess Kings Invitational Tournament was dope!

Positive branches of Hip-Hop, like Hip-Hop Chess Federation is making a better connection to the forgotten and under-represented children of metropolitan & suburban areas, than some of the most ill publisized areas of our culture.

Glad this event went down to show that Hip-Hop is not all about bling, sex, drugs, and money.

Can’t wait til the next event in Oakland. I wonder who from the ladies of Hip-Hop will compete. Can’t wait til Feb. 2008!

I guess they won’t be locking up RZA anytime soon. Those where probably RZA’s guns they found on t.i., RZA’s just so good with the strategy he strategized it well!
