Fergie and Chingy Score Top 10 Debuts, Lupe Fiasco Lands at #12

chingy2.jpgBlack Eyed Peas singer/rapper Fergie scores the highest debut on the charts this week, landing at #3 with over 142,000 copies sold of her solo debut The Dutchess. Chingy lands the next highest spot at #8 after moving slightly over 70,000 copies of his sophomore effort Hoodstar. Those two releases mark the only hip-hop debuts to make the Top 10 this week, as Lupe Fiasco takes the number 12 spot with around 58,000 copies sold of his debut album Food & Liquor. Elsewhere on the charts, Bone Thugs grabs #31 with their Koch project Thug Stories, DJ Shadow’s The Outsider comes in at #94, and underground staples Jedi Mind Tricks bring up the rear at #131 with their 5th LP Servants In Heaven, Kings In Hell.

    This goes out to everybody who be crying about their favorite artist not selling records. First of all now a days is not about the quality of your music, it’s about making a hit record, here you have Food & Liquor in my opinion the best album of 2006 (til Kingdom Come drops that is) the album was led by ”Kick, Push” a great record but not a club-record nor a radio-record, which is what these record labels are looking for they want radio play, spins, on the other hand here you have Yung Joc’s New Joc City one of the worst albums in history NOT JUST RAP but music history, led by ”It’s Going Down” as stupid as a song could get but, catchy, radio-friendly and a club banger, his album is approaching platinum. Sure i think Atlantic could have done more for Lupe’s project but, at the end of the day blame yourself for that, cause you all knew his album was coming out but, once the album leaked not once but twice everybody already had download it or copped the bootleg. That’s why you don’t see artist like Lupe Fiasco selling millions of records because, he’s music is not on the radio 24/7, you don’t see his video every hour and you don’t hear him at the club which is where all the white kids listen to all this garbage snap-music, you spend the whole night tryin’ to hear some State Prop ”Roc The Mic” and all you get is some ”Laffy Taffy” and you have no choice but, to stand and watch the cute white girl who can’t dance all night so you can holla at her after the club.

    I Have come to the conclusion that fans need stay out of the business aspect of music. Anytime you can come and judge an albums merit behind one weeks sales, you a bad motherfucker. First weeks numbers mean nothing to noone except the label and they are even not foolish enough to believe that their investment has failed. Fans are trying to turn the game into a scoring contest, not knowing that sales can increase, decrease or remain steady, sometimes it may take a year for a record to in platinum. I recall EPMD bragging back in the day “thirty days later, the lp went gold. So what you sayin?”

    If “Kick Push” would have got as many spins as “It’s Goin Down” or “Laffy Taffy”, it would have sold way more than it did.
    Nobody really believes “Laffy Taffy” got that many spins because it’s quality work.
    Not just saying you, but people need to stop saying that people won’t buy music that’s not ignorant. That’s bullshit. The radio propaganda system won’t allow other types of music to get played. And regardless of who you are, that subliminal shit of hearing a nigga 20 times a day, will at least make you give nigga a listen. Lupe has internet hype – that shit don’t translate to the streets. Think about it, who downloads the most music? The same muthafuckas that are on these blogs and other members of the “internet community.”
    What’s the difference between Kanye and these other niggas (Lupe, Rhymefest, etc.) sales. That nigga got a helluva lot of radio spins off top.

I think we can agree that if we ask around way more than a million people would say they’re Lupe Fiasco but, not all of them will buy his albums.

    This was Chingy’s 3rd album. My girl bought me the album last week. Needless to say I haven’t talked to her all week. Lol. But real talk, Lupe’s lp is dope. I do mean crack. His has a flow, wordplay, lyrics, a story to tell, and substance. Sometimes that sells, ie. Common’s last album, Jay’s album, Nas’s early work, Eminem, and Obie’s. But besides those, it’s very difficult for someone with true MCing skills to translate those skills into sells, ie. Jin. Lol. Better luck next time Lupe, I love the album, no downloading.

    Some people just don’t get it. I agree that 1st week sales r quite important but they r no indicator of a cathegorical F-L-O-P. Look at Akon’s LP Trouble who sold about 5k copies his first week, and 2 months later was certified gold and in no time reached platinum status. Most of the people who r quick to call out flops have never supported an artist in their entire lives( supporting meaning buying the artists CD not bootleg).     IF anybody Flopped it’s Chingy…who’s song is played a million times a day on BET and who has been number 1 on 106 & Park all summer. Also this is his 3rd album! He didn’t even break the 100,000 mark. For a debute album that doesn’t even get radio play..I’d say that is pretty good. I bet your favorite artist hasn’t even broken gold.     Damn Shame Damn Shame. I really liked Lupe’s Project (esp. The Best Buy one with the 3 extra tracks ck. Carrera Lu and Tilted). Chingy I can’t bring myself to buy since his horrible debut (I still feel burned after buying that.) Fergie was a huge disappointment I know it’s gonna be pop but it’s some really weak pop sh*t. I Like DJ Shadow but just didn’t buy it. Poor Sales reflects poor marketing and my archnemesis MTV/Viacom, If they don’t want to whore you out prepare to see alot of your CDs sitting in the warehouse.

If you define an album that is Extremely Well-Crafted, each track has been Thought-out and not just made while a nigga was high, and each track tries to reach to a new height and subject matter than the one before, then Yeah I guess Lupe did Flop. Chingy shouldn’t have sold 1 Record if you ask me. Why dont we judge niggas by they thought process while they making a record, as a Measure of Success.
