Juicy J’s impact has been felt throughout hip-hop for two decades. His countless scene-stealing guest appearances and the numerous songs sampling portions of his old records tend to overshadow the influence he's had on the game from behind the boards. The sounds crafted by the Juiceman for the likes of Three 6 Mafia, UGK, Ludacris and others have helped shaped crunk, trap music and just about anything falling under the southern rap umbrella.

Knowing a thing or two about production, Juicy J, who recently dropped his Travis Scott-assisted "Neighbor" video, unveils his five picks for hip-hop’s most important beats in the latest episode of XXL’s Pay Homage series. His top five includes several well-known tracks produced by Dr. Dre, and records from iconic rap groups OutKast and UGK.

“I always felt Dr. Dre was one of the best producers in the game,” Juicy J tells XXL. He chooses the Dre productions “It’s Funky Enough” by the D.O.C., “Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang” featuring Snoop Dogg and Eazy-E’s “Eazy-Duz-It,” which the Academy Award winner described as “hard as fuck.”

From West coast classics to the the pop-leaning “Hey Ya,” from ’Kast’s Grammy Award-winning, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, Juicy’s selection may be a bit more eclectic than some people may have expected. “It gave me some inspiration,” says Juicy, when speaking on André 3000’s solo hit. “I actually bought me a bass guitar. Real shit.”

Not only did Juicy J narrow down his favorite five beats, he also spoke on why Beastie Boys’ "Paul Revere"—the record that made him want to be a record producer—is so special. “When I first heard it I was just blown away by it, because the beat is going backwards,” Juicy reveals. “This is the ’80s. Somebody walked into the studio, made a beat and was like, ‘Yo, turn that shit backwards.” That was something I had never heard before.”
