maya angelou death lyrics
This morning, the world learned of the sad news of the passing of the great Dr. Maya Angelou, a legendary author and poet who was easily one of the best and brightest voices of her generation. As influential as she was lauded, Angelou won countless awards throughout her career, and stood tall as a voice for women and the African-American community. With such a wide reach, it's no surprise that her name has popped up in its fair share of hip-hop lyrics, particularly among the Common's, Wale's and Lupe Fiasco's of the rap world—those who strive to make a change through their art, much like Angelou did through hers. XXL compiled 15 hip-hop songs that reference Angelou. RIP to one of the all-time greats.

The 52 Best Albums By XXL Freshmen

xxl freshmen mixtapes

There’s a great deal of preparation that goes into choosing XXL Freshman. Research. Attending shows. Debates over whom are the hottest. However, sometimes the deciding factor is over who has the streets talking with their mixtapes.

Tapes are the best way to gauge how your music is doing. It’s a melting pot of your talents to showcase your progress, as well as who you align yourself with in the rap industry. A lot of the times, tapes that have an MC rapping over other people’s instrumentals catapulted them into the conversation of who’s next. Few of our Freshman picks like Jon Connor and Fashawn have made undeniable classics in the underground by jumping on beats rapped on by Jay Z and Nas.

There are plenty of tapes to choose from when highlighting the best mixtapes by XXL Freshman. Some rappers have year’s worth of mixtape before their debut albums, while others have made a dent in the rap game by having one extremely well received release. The formula for what a mixtape is these days keeps changing rapidly. To be clear though, Isaiah Rashad doesn’t have tape out, so he is excluded from this list. We still fuck with Cilvia Demo heavy.

So, with that said, from Lil Boosie to J. Cole, these are The 73 Best XXL Freshmen Mixtapes.—Complied By Eric Diep, Dan Rys, Marvin Jules And Jeffrey Whaley

Dr Dre billionaire
It may have taken 40 years, but hip-hop may have its first billionaire—Dr. Dre. Following the sale of Beats Electronics to Apple last week for $3.2 billion—and the subsequent hilarious video uploaded by Tyrese—Dre is very nearly—though maybe not quite—the first billionaire in hip-hop's ever-expanding realm. Many may have thought it'd be Jay Z or Diddy—and they may have thought that, too—but the West Coast O.G. beat them all to the punch, and he'll be laying in a bed of money for a long time to come.

Even before Dre's potential billion, hip-hop's luxurious lifestyle has been reaching towards the stratosphere for two decades now, dating back to the days of Biggie and Puff reppin' Bad Boy and Coogi in the 1990s. With all this in mind, XXL compiled a list of 63 hip-hop songs where rappers are reppin' their billions—or at least their ambitions to achieve them along the way. It'll still be Dre Day until the money dries up. —Dan Rys
