Stream DJ Rude One’s ‘ONEderful’ Album

DJ Rude One drops his new project today via Closed Sessions. ONEderful features Your Old Droog, Roc Marciano, SHIRT, Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire, Westside Gunn, Conway The Machine, J-Zone, among others. Rude has been in the game for years. ONEderful is a must listen for all hip-hop fans who love rap. We spoke to Rude about the album and the inspiration behind it.

XXL: What made you want to put together this project?

DJ Rude One: I really just wanted to make some songs with the cats I listen to most. I honestly didn't care if it ever got released commercially I was just happy to make these songs and have them live in my phone for my personal playlist.

What inspires you now?

A lot of the same things that inspired me when I first got in to hip hop. Digging for records, scratching records. Also, a lot of the music I've been listening to the last few years really made we want to get involved again. There's so many dope artists out right now.

The artists are all underground hip-hop heavyweights, why them in particular?

I'm just a huge fan of all these dudes and I think they make some of the best music these days. I had a pretty short list of who I wanted to work with and there were only two I couldn't lock down. One was a legend who wanted way too much money for the feature. The other was a local Chicago dude who said my beats were huff and offered to have his "producer" re-do them for me. [Laughs]

Westside and Conway specifically are two MCs that's killing the game right now. Talk to me about them

Two of my favorites artists and two super real cats. I was playing Westside Gunn records at parties in Chicago for a few years before anyone there was really up on him. Anyway, I just emailed him about collabing one day, but stressed I didn't just want a typical PayPal rap transaction like just sending money for an emailed verse. I come from the studio era so it was important to me to meet and at least chill a little with everyone I made songs with. He probably thought I was crazy, but I insisted on meeting up with him so I flew down to Atlanta where he was staying at the time and we kicked it. Me and Doc West (Single Minded Pros) went to his spot and he was super gracious. To this day we still check in with each other pretty regularly. That's how my joint with Conway came about too, through Gunn. He's a real cat and I'm dumb appreciative to have him in my corner

What were you using to produce the joint?

Half the album was done on the MPC 3000 and half was done on the MPC Renaissance. I'm still a bit slow with the software/controller methods and I'm just more comfortable chopping on the MPC. I used a Rane 57 DJ mixer for the cuts

What's next for you?

Well the vinyl for this drops in January & beyond that hopefully more music with like-minded cats whose music I really fuck with. The artists already on this project in particular. And maybe a few more dj gigs now that I'm in NY. We'll see. This was a pretty organic process so far & I'm in no hurry for anything
