DJ Chong Wizard & Tekset Present Phoenix Jones: Family Guy Mixtape

I remember one night I was locked up in Central Bookings downtown, BK in a 20 man cell with 40-50 dudes, and after a while when the judge stopped seeing us we all started talking ish about our hoods, rappers, hate of police, etc. Then this one guy mentioned how he loved Family Guy and everyone started raving about the show and how gangsta it was. Then the guy who initially started that conversation took a bump of Manteca (heron) to the head, but that doesn’t make his Family Guy statement any less credible. I was just glad to see I wasn’t the only nucca in the hood that was a fan of that cartoon. Now, I don’t know much about Phoenix Jones, but I do know we have one thing in common: Family Guy. I guess it’s a thug thing.

Another thing I noticed about homie is how hard he goes in on these Parkay (butter) tracks. A man of slick rhymes like, “I love music like—a Kamikaze love losing life/listen while I show you how I do the mic/I’m so bright I outshine the lights/I’m so nice with the rhymes I realize I ain’t gotta write/futuristic, buddy, outta sight/I time travel, man, they call him Buddy McFly/something like a plane 30,000 feet up in the sky,” with the ill flow to back it up on “Love You So.” On “Mizery Chastain” he went in on an dreamy/fantasy-ish beat and spoke on a young girl lost with her mind on six who “Performed exotic acts, the shit was pitiful/it only made her miserable/desiccated her physical/ate her soul for lunch in more ways than she tasted genitals.” I have a few shorties like that on my block. Though if I was a rapper I would care less about dedicating a whole song to their “shortcummings”

All I can say about the Cleveland representative is that he is straight nasty with his. His rhyme patterns, versatile flow and lyrics are just as good as I’ve heard from anyone in a minute. He can drop a concept joint like “Mizery Chastain,” go straight bezerk on the mic with joints like “Rhyme King,” “Elemental Cannon,” and “Respect” or make stomp-out music like the hardcore “Survival.” Had Lebron taken Cleveland to the NBA Finals then maybe more heads would be paying attention to Ohio and take notice to the talent that’s in the booth and not on the court. That being said, Phoenix might have to wait till next June for the hip-hop community to start paying attention to what’s going on in Cleveland, OH again ‘cause That Bone Thugs reunion just isn’t grabbing our very divided attention.

Hottest Joint: “High Evolutionary”

Weakest Joint: “Band Of Brothers”
